Canada’s taking over the world, or at least its music. July 2 marked the beginning of our month-long residency on Apple Music’s Beats 1. For 5 consecutive Saturdays, Canadian personalities will take over this hour-long, part music, part infotainment show.
George Stroumboulopoulos kicked off the series exposing such homegrown talent as Darcys, Fucked Up & Sam Roberts Band to the over 100 countries that tune in live weekly.
“People have spent decades trying to discuss who Canadians are, so it’s impossible to accomplish such a big task in one hour” George Stroumboulopoulos told the Financial Post in an article about the takeover last month.
Strombo goes on in the article to say that the most difficult part of curating a show like this is the ability to showcase what’s relevant and ‘cool’ in the vast Canadian music landscape, from ‘coast-to-coast-to-coast’.
Beats 1, Apple Music’s 24/7 live-hosted music station, has seen previous success with the ‘Take Over’ series, with Canada being the third country to participate behind Australia’s Triple J for AusMonth and starRo in Tokyo, Japan.
Zane Lowe, chief resident DJ at Beats 1, said in the same FP article they “came to Canada from the point of view of us benefiting. It really wasn’t a case of ‘how can we help?’ – it was more like, ‘How can you help us get this music across a global audience and make us, Beats 1, sound even more exciting.”
Upcoming Takeover Shows
July 9 – Josie Dye (Toronto’s Edge 102.1, Cosmo TV) showcasing Dine Alone Records
July 16 – Coeur de Pirate representing Dare To Care Records
July 23 – Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene, Founder Arts & Crafts Records), for Arts & Crafts
July 30 – Emily Haines (Metric) For Last Gang Records
Good morning. Not feeling very bitchy (perhaps a little) BUT:
“Beats 1, Apple Music’s 24/7 live-hosted music station”…
Gee, Apple’s gotten into LIVE HOSTING; whereas ‘CBC Indie Rock’ (R3) lost all live hosting, then any hosting, then curating and programming, and now has taken itself off commercial Canadian and international ‘web air’. Hmmmmm.
“People have spent decades trying to discuss who Canadians are, so it’s impossible to accomplish such a big task in one hour”, says the Strombo — but, I’m sorry to repeat, R3 just took itself off international web air.
Le rayonnement international passe maintenant par le web. (It’s through the web that you now get international reach.)
Get back on track, R3!
Good Morning!
Nice post Tiffy!
hello
G’day!
So, now Farage has quit. Discombobulation reigns…
He was an member of the European Parliament even though he wanted to take the UK out of Europe
Mr Farage said the party would campaign against “backsliding” on the UK’s exit from the EU, saying he planned to see out his term in the European Parliament – describing his party as “the turkeys that voted for Christmas”. From http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-36702468
Good Morning
@OldAbe – Thanks!
@BfO 6:24am, what can I say other than he’s an idiot
Good morning!
Great post @tiffy! Thank you!:)
We’re gettin’ some heat today, managed to coerce the 2 older kids to agree to come swimming later with the promise of an ice cream cone.
Currently installing KEXP app on my phone to replace R3 for my listening pleasure. Nice work ceeb :/
But on a happy note, this place is great & I said it before but wow am I impressed with how you’ve all pulled this together. Seriously, you all rock.
:)xo
Good morning!
It’s a hot and steamy forecast here for today and there is potential for severe weather this afternoon. All I can say is, go ahead and get it out of your system before the WFF! Please, please, please.
Also nice work everyone!
Some of you may enjoy this. Not a hard read, despite its subject being language.

” “In my day-to-day habit of moving between chatting with coworkers on Slack, writing posts on Tumblr, Twitter, IRC, and Reddit, I realized within myself I have different ways of conducting myself on those places,” Rugnetta said in a phone interview.
Or, as he puts it in his video, “Maybe I talk more ‘Tumblrish’ on Tumblr and less ‘Twitterese’ on Facebook.” “
Put up by John Teeter (TB3) on the R3 Book page:
“Feel what you do about the current state of CBC Radio 3, but this definitive timeline captures the spirit of it all quite perfectly. And although the geography of where we do changes in our lifetimes, the passion for how we do, never will. That community I was/am so proud to be part of back in 2006, still exists to this day. And will continue to.
A great read, and try and overlook the pic they used of me…”

@BfO 7:02am, It’s just a repost of the timeline the put up for the final day of live hosting last year
Hey, Internet friends. How was everyone’s weekends?
Hi zammy! Weekend was catastrophe-free so I call success.
You?
Hey Zammy. Weekend was pretty low key. Just relaxing and enjoying the nice weather. Puttering around in the yard….gardening….walks to the beach….watching baseball/F1. It was nice.
I went to a board game night with three strangers last night and came away with three friends. I’d call the weekend a roaring success
Good morning! Great post @tiffy (in a sad kind of way).
Set up a zipline for the kids yesterday!
So now that the R3.pls stream has been killed, does anyone have any suggestions for another fantastic .pls streams I can play via vlc?
@Funhog – KEXP is pretty good. Not sure if it will work for you though. I stream it through their web player.
Thanks Old Abe. This link works in VLC:

Good morning!
BBQ and beer at friends’ later!
NO fireworks, just too damn dry.
Nice work done here, contrats !
hey everyone!
holy cow, Ben Caplan is pretty great to see live. He’s in a couple of ON locations before heading over to Europe.
If you see him at a venue near you, I’d say it’s well worth the trip to go see him
whats the texas stream that plays canadian indie?
UK politics is definitely interesting.
“The turkeys that voted for Christmas” doesn’t sound like a good thing to me
@tiffy do you mean This Great White North, the show on KOOP? I have yet to check it out but wanna!:)
@lucky – I think that’s what I mean? lol. What day / time is it on?
Gobble?
@tiffy Fridays 4:30…Texas time? I think they’re behind us by an hour? Maybe?

Helloooo
Hi, reg!
How are you doing, Benoit?
Doing all right. I don’t like the city at 30+, and then there’s the black pavement, but then, that’s griping about summer in the city. Mustn’t.
I’m off to buy “manly things”: summer chainsaw oil, 2-cycle oil (chainsaws need oil in the gasoline), and 4 litres of high-octane petrol, as garf calls it.
And you, what’s got your motor running?
“R3” is playing Ballad of Bruce Moose. Makes me grin.
Wow. Big win from 2 sets down for Milos.
Oh, Off topic….#sports
@Garf – Chris Evans is stepping away from Top Gear.
http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-36707266?ocid=socialflow_facebook&ns_mchannel=social&ns_campaign=bbcnews&ns_source=facebook
O.A. Enough significant elements around (incl. knowing Wimble. is on)…
Chris Evans: people must be cheering…
Incidentally, the R3 Book page isn’t seeing a tenth of the activity this one is. And this one’s not on fire, so that gives you an idea…
Did you guys see your awesome Prime Minister at PrideTo on Saturday? That was awesome.
Abe
I was NOT expecting that. Raonic looked completely out of it. He had no swagger in his step; looked totally defeated. VERY happy to hear it… Kind of wish I’d watched longer.
Happy Monday all and Happy 4th to the Americans!
Hi Darbs!
Hello reginula! 😀
How are you and Devin and Steve and Sasky doing today? I saw the picture of your bike!
Great Post! I’m over at the Canada Day post to catch up on Zammy’s playlist!
I am excited about that bike. Going to a bike shop and getting advice about what works best for me was a good idea. It makes getting back into bike riding so much easier and Steve was pretty happy about it too.
Devin has been feeling fine this past week. Yay! He goes for an iron infusion tomorrow and that should perk him up some more.
Sasky is pleasant. It has been hot and stormy. I like watching storms though.
How are you doing?
OK… off for some fourth of July fun down here in Oregon, talk with you all later today!
@Zammy. I tuned out after the first two sets. Thought the same….no swagger/confidence. I saw a tsn update saying he was ching back, so tuned into the 5th set.
I think I heard then say he has never come back from 2 sets down.
I’m glad to hear that, Darbs! 😀
I’m fine. Wish it was hot here! It’s just stormy -_- Working on tomorrow’s post. Hope you guys will like it.

Hi!
You know that timeline thing really makes me cranky. I just finished a wiki page with the content and pics, and was just starting to flesh it out with non-CBC content. And now they repost it?
http://radio3wiki.info/w/index.php/Radio_3_Timeline
#927 @darbar yay on the bike – that is so cool, and clearly, so is Steve!
I wondered if that R3 timeline was supposed to be their attempt at honouring us? A year old post doesn’t quite cut it but it was interesting to look it over again.
Thanks VJ. He has some good qualities. 😉
@Darbs In case you’re interested, BreakOut West is looking for volunteers: http://breakoutwest.ca/fest/blog/call-volunteers-breakout-west-2016/
my facebook is blowing up over the BLM protest at the pride parade.
tiffy – bureau of land management?
Darbar – it is cool that they posted it. (I just lost many hours of my life on it – cue world’s smallest violin.) But now it’s on the wiki, and we can add to it. I mostly wanted to capture the photos.
@vj – black lives matter activist group shut down the parade for half an hour with a list of demands to be met by the organization’s president. One of which being to remove any involvement of the police force from participating the festivities. The people are divided on this one.
https://www.thestar.com/news/crime/2016/07/04/police-chief-waiting-on-pride-organizers-to-explain-parade-ban.html
Tiffy,
I saw loads of photos from the indie88 folks of Pride parade in Toronto.
The R3 Stream is not staying on for me again. *sigh*
@shonica – ya it looked like they were on a rooftop. that would be sweet. I’ve gone once before and was on street level. it was INSANITY. so many ppl
reg @ 11:01 We will hate it and complain to the management.
…and go “BOOOO, HISSSS”
Darbs @ 11:18 – I think that’s called “”damage control.”
“Yeah, we fucked up…”
tiffy – oh, interesting. I’m divided as well on that. Hmm.
@BfO, I can’t believe it’s over 30. Yikes.
BLM people need to understand — and they’re not alone in this — that their ‘rights’ stop right where — before — they infringe on other peoples’ rights.
For instance the right to put on, or peaceably enjoy, a parade.
have a great day! I’m going to celebrate the US’s independence by eating guisado tacos…
vj, darbar: frankly, i don’t think the hovers that be at cbc are trying to piss off one or annoy the other. (pizza typing: 1 finger)
@darbar #934 it was a nice if sad walk down memory lane but the year old part stings; couldn’t even come up with anything new:(
@reginula – I might consider it this time. I didn’t want to be stuck at one venue last time so I didn’t last time. Thanks for the link.
*apparently I didn’t post this and I thought I had.
@reginula #930 I am glad I have tomorrow off so I can spend some time here and check out your handy work:)
R3 had a great history and it really really sucks what they have done with it but we all know that already.
dang, the sun is out again!
I committed to doing an outdoor photo shoot with a friend and regretted it the moment I said yes. i was hoping it would rain buckets and i would have an out …
@morgana Thanks! 😀
@Darbs I see some cool ones! Is the driving one to harsh? I guess it would be super fun. Imagine driving around Yukon Blonde or something!
Darbar and Reginula ,
BOW volunteering, the Tarp King did the driving job and one trip he remembers fondly, was driving Grant and Dan Mangan to the airport on the Monday morning after the fest. I did delegate registration so my shifts were done before the evening shows started and I got to meet a lot of music people.
Also Sage( Shred Kelly) brought me a coffee from Parlour Coffee on Saturday morning. What a sweetheart! : )
@Shonica Sounds like lots of fun indeed!
Those both sound pretty good to me Shonica. Hmmm….I will put my app in.
It was fun and I would do it again!
I sent my application in. I see the volunteer coordinator is the same person as Regina Folk Fest. I am sure that will help as I have met with her a couple times recently.
Darbar, yes same here, the WFF volunteer coordinator was doing BOW too. Best part is whenever she sees me/us now she greets me/ us by name.
zAMMY YOUR cANADA dAY PLAYLIST HAS KEPT ME GOING ALL DAY. cONTRATS.
I should also say there are about 3000 volunteers for WFF.
@Shonica – I was thinking about how many volunteers there would be! Nice to be remembered.
@shufle – I am back to listening to that playlist now.
So glad everyone’s liking that playlist. Any ideas for a theme for the next one?
heading home. have a great night everyone.
Night tiffy.
@Zammie – Hmmm…summer songs or road trip?
I’m done the playlist. Going to try the stream. Wish me luck.
spinning……
Provincial playlists, festival playlists, band connection playlists….
still spinning
Mine decided to play now.
shufle, the new stR3am starts for me (desktop iMac) through Chrome. Not FF or Safari.
I’m alone with my thoughts.
It’s so quiet.
No you just needed to refresh your thoughts. 😉
You can help me add to my Canada Day playlist. http://open.spotify.com/user/darbarspecial/playlist/20qsVkXTGYGXHamZ4lTxGH
what is this?
This blog you mean Anonymous? A soft place to land since we can’t comment on the CBC Music site.
or do you refer to “this”? This meaningless existence that only leads to death?
Sorry, I chased away another one.
Sorry Darbar, I’m swamped at work and was looking to a nice stream to chug along. I can’t help you with yours but I can listen to it, thanks!
Though what about “Oh Alberta” ?
*blows by
That’s it, I’m tired of streaming soulless CBC.
🙂
Thanks shufle. I thought it was on there but I will rectify that.
I heard one song by Hillsburn on CBC at some point. Playing their album now.
First cut is promising. http://www.hillsburn.com/music/
I didn’t mean to start a panic. :-p
Hillsburn is heavy on the singing. Impressive album up to now.
I am pretty sure I was voting for Hillsburn in Searchlight last year.
Makes sense. They were noticed last year, after gelling in 2014. And now they’re doing some festivals.
Now listening to Maurice Radio Libre, via iTunes (but available straight off the web). Rock, from France, But not French rock.
Actually, not from France at all; from Loyola U., in N. Orleans.
what time zone is the time stamp on this site from?
oh and hi! I am home from work:)
TIMESTAMP TEST
Looks like VAN time, Morgana. Just like the blog was.
That would be Western time?
WST?
I am not knowing all of the timey stuff….
I believe that would be Pacific. I am not good with that timey stuff either.
well i guess that not everything has been recentralized to toronto then;)
