Clear your schedules! This week’s playlist is a DOOZY! It’s 47 songs. It’s more than 2 and a half hours long! And it’s ALL B.C.!
Yes, following last week’s celebration of all that is Canada, we’re starting on a trip around the Great White North from coast to coast to coast. After today, the first playlist of each month will be dedicated to exposing all the music goods that each province has to offer. That will take us all the way to next July and Canada’s 150th birthday!
Today you’ll be hearing from dozens of bands both familiar and obscure. Some may sound familiar, but they’re not. Some you may have forgotten (Remember Brasstronaut? Choir Practice? The Organ?)
Hopefully you make some new musical discoveries. And if there’s anyone from B.C. you feel deserves some more attention, give them a shout in the comments.
Enjoy the music! And I won’t be at all offended if you don’t make it through the whole list…
(What do you think? Is this playlist too long? Is there too much rock? Not enough hip hop? Give me your feedback below.)
MORNING! Great Idea and thanks for the playlist!!!
nicely done tools!
Morning.
Morning! Light rain here, hoping for more. Droughts make me nervous.
Splendid playlist zammy/Nick/TOoL! I’m hoping I can get it to play on my phone while I drive around hunting for clothes to cut apart.
🙂
Hey, the City of Toronto has unblocked ‘www.cbcmusic.ca’! Not sure why, but the artists section is still blocked, i.e. artists.cbcmusic.ca, also not sure if I’ll go and listen though.
And hope you’re all well, I feel like we need a better ‘chat’ widget here. Sorry just the developer in me chiming in, great job otherwise everyone!
Btw – I think we/you should put a page on Facebook as well for ourbasement.ca, its the devil i know but you can leverage it to get more people aware of this site.
@wynn – I have a facebook page made but it’s not live yet, I just need to change the theme and fix up the ascetics in here, and i’ve been so damn busy at work this week. I don’t want to push people towards a site that is only like 25% filled out. It’s just difficult for me to get everything done this week.
I have two plugins that are going to be added. One is a new commenting platform and the other is user profiles.
Wynnzie
New chat functionality is in the cards. We will soon be migrating to our own hosting where we will do it all up proper
@Tiff & @Nick Excellent, that sounds great. BTW – So now that I have no one to bitch at at CBC Music, I’ll be bitching here – JUST KIDDING!
I wonder if you/we should start some crowd funding thing on KickStarter or indiegogo?
@princefarming – let me know if you have a chance to look at these and can give me some thoughts.

Hello.
@Tiff sure I’ll have a look, thanks
Remember to post your summer songs for next week’s playlist! Don’t make me do it all myself
holy, do I feel old
you didn’t know Payola$? Paul Hyde and Bob Rock, who went on to become a big-time producer for bands like the Cult, Offspring, Bryan Adams…
Saw them live, opening for Split Enz, way back when.
ps: it’s Eyes of a Stranger. as in
you’ve got the eeeyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyes
of a stranger
Oh, here you all are. Good Morning!
Thanks for the playlist Zammy.
Corrected that. Thanks, krib
Payolas had bigger hits than that, too. Lots crappier than Eyes of a Stranger
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IDEW76cppc
that’s when they became Paul Hyde & the payolas.
trying to break into the US and de-emphasizing the name Payolas because of the stigma in the US, from some 25 years before or so
do y’all know about the whole payola thing in the US? Took down Alan Freed, the guy who (IIRC) is credited for the term rock & roll
you’ve got the eeyyyyeeeeeesssss of a stranger
@kirk – 80’s music is tied with indie music for me. I’m OBSESSED with 80’s music lol
Jason Collett’s version of Stars: Reunion always sounds like a summer song to me. It’s something you’d listen to in a great big convertible with the top down.
that’s a lot of research you did there, TooL
I’m curious how you picked some of the tunes, like that Trooper one. Random? did you listen through and think it was probably the single from the album? Wikipedia?
I do find it amusing that people are into 80s music these days (and you’re not the only person I’ve heard that from, tiffy), but that’s probably because I am An Old.
That’s from Do You Trust Your Friends, right loweeda?
Affirmative, Zammy.
@loweeda – woah woah woah. This is not a trend. I literally grew up on supertramp, yes, genesis (i’m aware that most of these are 70’s) duran duran, phil collins, paul mccartney.
Like, their has not been a time that I haven’t loved 80’s music.
here’s another old BC band.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBmvElD_0Ow
*there.
that playlist is only scratching the surface, really
Rose Chronicles (you all probably know their name if you heard Grant relaying Chris Murphy’s rant about losing most promising Juno to them)
Delerium
Skinny Puppy
Grapes of Wrath
Lava Hay
Images in Vogue
I know these are all old bands, although Delerium is still going, and Grapes of Wrath released an album about 4 years ago. It’s a shame that it’s so hard to find the alternative stuff from back in the day. It toils in obscurity
tiffy: I wasn’t saying you were just being ‘trendy’!
I think the enduring popularity of this music speaks to its quality, really, and I love that even today people can listen to songs I grew up loving and still find things to love, too.
so when hit AB, don’t forget about Stampeders. They’re playing the Gateway festival. Shame I can’t go.
good work, Mr Dawson!
@loweeda – totally. There’s a reason why 70’s and 80’s music is still very relevant and popular today. Because it was good!! 😀
krib
I did end up on Wiki in the end. I looked all over for a decent source of B.C. bands, but nothing was really reliable enough. Wiki isn’t exactly the best source, either – a band has to either post about themselves or get big enough for someone else to do it for them – but it was the best of a bad lot.
In the end, I went through and listened to a handful of tracks from each artist on their list and chose a track from each that fit the sound and feel that was my aim. It was a lot of work and I listened to a whole lot of terrible music, but I think the end result was well worth it.
I also was looking specifically for tracks from artists with relatively few spins on Spotify. There are only a couple that have 1M on more than one track. Most have less than 500K.
my kids, in their younger days, didn’t know about Green Day.
they were playing that snot-punk stuff, so I pointed them to Green Day.
Then American Idiot was released and everyone knew about Green Day again, because it had been a few years between albums, I think
I think I got one of them into Rancid and the Clash, too. And then into ska
crappy radio music has been around since the days people like Pat Boone co-opted and whitewashed the rock & roll sound.
the 70s and 80s had lots of great stuff, but lots of garbage as well
and let’s not forget the 60’s. It may have been the biggest decade for shifting of pop music from swing/jazz/blues/rock and roll, and the incorporation of all kinds of different stuff into popular music
so that means when you put Stampeders on the AB list, I won’t have to worry about it being Sweet city woman? cool!
Spotify won’t play the Great Aunt Ida track for me on the PC desktop version. It’s as if it knows I like Great Aunt Ida, or something.
my older brother likes to call the 70s “the decade that taste forgot”
Raonic – Federer are going FIVE SETS!
Wow. Zammy, you watching this tennis match?!?
HAHA!!
I like to say that nothing was average in the 80s. They were either amazing or amazingly bad.
I’m the former.
Abe
This is some of the best tennis I have seen in a long time, and the best tennis I’ve Ever seen from Milos.
@Zammy – Agreed. That match against Goffin was a turning point for him I hope. This is amazing.
We have the tennis match on in the office.
Good morning everyone!
We’re about halfway to 100 comments. Remember, the 100th will get the chance to help make the final playlist of the month!
OK, so it’ll be awhile before we can play the “post one word because it might be #100” game. good to know 😉
Summer songs – My Girl – Yukon Blonde. I associate that whole Tiger Talk album with summer for some reason.
We’re averaging around 160-170 comments per post thus far on OurBasement
I’m really enjoying this playlist, Zammy. thanks for all the work you did to build it
(and I’m going to keep referring to you as Zammy, if that’s OK, because I don’t like calling you a TooL)
Just don’t call me Shirley
And you’re welcome. I’m glad you’re enjoying it.
Abe
That net defense, and Raonic defeat of it, was AMAZING!!!
@Zammy – I’m getting excited…
Abe
Raonic is serving Howitzers!
THIs is also Rock & Hyde.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5kLzAajFZQ
Talking about tennis put everyone to sleep
I think everyone has gone to watch the match
I can’t watch sports at work. Well, I guess I could, but it would seem wrong somehow–like that’s pushing the procrastination thing just a liiitle too far.
YEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!
He’s done it! Raonic is in his first ever Grand Slam Final!
Alright @zammy, firing up your playlist now, and getting in the zone for programming/coding work…
Half way to my ideal Mens Wimbledon Final
Spice Girls – Wannabe is 20 years old today. Also, the post on CBC Music loads like garbage on my computer.
http://www.cbcmusic.ca/posts/11968/spicegirls-wannabe
Hellooo
What tennis? No clue here.
Guess who is very late to work but can post from mobile from an uber? 😀
reginula: You-ber!
Hans Gruber!
MacGruber!
PS. I’m up to the Bear Mountain track on the playlist and loooving it. yay, Bear Mountain! Release a new album, please!
Also, my beloved Gina Loes and the awesome The Ruffled Feathers are in today’s playlist. If you’re not familiar with them, I hope you enjoy their music.
@loweeda @zammy Bahahahahaha
“Toronto Maple Leafs have traded goaltender Jonathan Bernier to Anaheim Ducks in return for a conditional pick from the 2017 NHL entry draft.” lol
I think there should be stickers that say “all ourbasement are belong to us.”
Oooooh… I like that!
Hello!
Escher figured out how time works!
wannabe is a “beautiful piece of 90s nostalgia” is it?
Even better, if you do like Gina Loes, her EP is on name-your-price mode on Bandcamp: https://ginaloes.bandcamp.com/releases
And you can check it out here! http://play.spotify.com/album/4O3KW8Y226a10dFRbnfn8s
I do like her, reginula!
So far next week’s playlist is all of TWO SONGS!
Come on, guys. Do you just not like summer?
(Also, this is post #81.)
Hi Marie!!
I think Hollerado and Hey Ocean! are two very summery bands.
Stella Ella Ola too!
is next week AB?
other BC bands
Chilliwack
the Paperboys
@Donna I’m glad to hear that. I love that EP! And from my long-distance interactions with her I can tell she’s the loveliest.
krib
Next month is Alberta. It’s all written in the post.
reginula
Any specific songs?
@Zammy I think I’ll saaaay
Hey Ocean – Big Blue Wave. Or I Am a Heart. or Make a New Dance up (They ARE summer, this is tough)
Hollerado – Desire 126 or Pick me Up
Stella Ella Ola – One of the two I know from Radio 3 ( ._.) (Hypersleep or Too Pretty)
Hi Tiffy!
More on Summer songs: The Dearhearts! But they deserve a spot on the Alberta playlist too.
Alberta isn’t coming for another few weeks. Pick a song!
well, I don’t think it actually says next month is AB up there ^
but here are some (feel free to change to any other song by said band, except for using Sweet City Woman – I’ll forever be annoyed with you if you do that)
Stampeders – playin in the band
Captain Tractor – Here we go Again
Smalls – (take your pick)
Corb Lund – Truck got Stuck, or maybe Long Gone to Saskatchewan since SK will be next on your list
Huevos Rancheros –
Cadence Weapon
Chixdiggit
Andy Stochansky has a song called Shine that could be a good summer playlist addition. It’s also on my playlist called “Songs to Make you Feel Good When you Need To,” just as a point of trivia.
The Wet Secrets – Sunshine
That’s pretty summery.
krib
You’re right. I apologize. I left out that we’re doing Alberta next, but I did say Provincials would be happening on the first playlist of the month. Those are all great suggestions and I have marked them down. Got any summer songs for next week, though?
Fine.
The Dearhearts – July. Or For Better or For Worse.
BUT THEY ARE SUMMERY
You know what that means?
The Saskatchewan playlist comes out in September, probably very close to my birthday….
*Wiggles eyebrows*
I’m confused: are you asking for songs for AB for next month, or are you asking just for songs for an upcoming playlist?
Krib:
Provincial playlists – first of the month
Next week – summer playlist
What loweeda said. (Although AB suggestions, while appreciated, aren’t as pressing.)
Zammy, I think you are your own comment #100.
Bahahahaha
I am! And as the first to follow that comment, you’re the winner, reginula!!!
well, you can’t have a Canadian music summer song playlist without the likes of Len and Bran Van 3000
hahaha! The universe wants you to make playlists, Zammy.
Emerald Lake, AB by Save the Whales
I thought staff members and family members couldn’t enter the contest…
Home Again by the Polyjesters is one that I like as a summery song
they’re also from AB
krib
Great picks! (Len, BV3K) Any particular songs?
reg
My rental, my rules. None of us are getting paid for this, anyway!
loweeda
I reject that reality and substitute my own!
I already threw like five song recommendations in there so ¯_(ツ)_/¯
ALSO: Must be a resident of Canada.
@Russ 10:33
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
@Zammy – It’s got to be “Steal My Sunshine” and “Drinking In LA” doesn’t it?
(Only songs I know by either of those bands :P)
uh, do they have more than one (that anyone knows)?
Steal my Sunshine
Drinkin in LA
Echo Beach by Martha & the Muffins
I’d throw King of Love by Blackie & the Rodeo Kings out there for consideration, too, but I’m into the rockabilly thing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRqs4iJAXrI
Is rough gem by Islands summery enough? It feels right to me.
Tomorrow is that festival with Rah Rah and Library Voices TT__TT
Do you know if teleportation is possible already?
curtis
I say no to no good song submissions!
(No Nickelback)
has Reg suggested any LV for summery stuff? like Traveller’s Digest?
I haven’t! But that’s a good one. Or Sunburnt in LA
Why not booooth?
Ok, maybe not
reginula: when teleportation becomes possible I am entering the Hamilton lottery EVERY SINGLE DAY.
I’d say this little gem by Wil counts as a summer song
Is he considered a BC artist or AB? He’s from CGY but now lives in Victoria
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEYolF5AnVw
and I know KirkofDoom has mentioned it before and I’ll second it
if you get a chance to see Wil live, GO!!!! don’t stop and think, just go
so much sound from so few people…
Yo @topofourlungs… I’m really digging the playlist!
From The Pack AD (who are in this playlist. Double topical points!)
Hey all, so we’re playing Ponderosa Fest coming up in August and it’s going to be a helluva fest with a fantastic line up. Great Summer get away good time. Just in time to make it even better for you all, the fest has given us a promo code that will knock off $40 from the $169 Tier 2 Weekend Pass. The code for the Pack is , of course, “ANIMAL”.
So you know, the promo code only works when someone goes to purchase the Tier 2 Weekend Pass. Once they select it and go to checkout there should be a box that says “enter promo code”. They just need to click that, enter the code, and then they should see the $40 discount applied.
So go to the site, which you were doing anyway, and get yer discount…your band, The Pack a.d. http://www.ponderosafestival.com/
Look at this lineup for Ponderosa, too!
http://www.ponderosafestival.com/2016-lineup/
Sadly too far for me to go.. Is anyone going to Riverfest in Elora?
I have a promo for that… if i can find it…
Lauren Mann (past SearchLight winners) dropped a surprise album today! Check out Dearestly here: http://www.laurenmannmusic.com/landing-page.php?referrer=/
ASLO, for the Non-facebookers (no judgement) I am going to set up a little draw for some old CBC r3 bucky buttons.. It isn’t much but I need to put some good into the world right now.. …details to follow asap(maybe tonight)
Lauren Mann’s new album is also pay-what-you-want!
@sitrucj That’s the best kind of good you can put into the world right now 😀
Thanks for the playlist @TopofourLungs, great tunes this morning!
in my last post .. is rendered differently than … Interesting.
@sitrucj – I am not going to Elora Riverfest but DAMN that is a great lineup!!!
Thinking about The Pack A.D. makes me melancholy these days, because I associate them with nvp.
But! nvp was a great friend to us all and to Canadian indie music and so thinking of him in relation to anything is a good thing, in spite of also being tinged with sadness.
I hope that makes sense.
Hi all! I am enjoying the playlist Zammie. What great ideas! 😉
I will think of some summer songs for you when I get a minute or two.
@Samara – Makes a lot of sense. Pack AD make me think of NVP as well. There are a lot of fond memories that make me smile in with the sad.
@abe The riverfest lineup is rediculous. 95% Canadian; it feels R3. I am currently going on my own. it is too good to list.
where’s Benoit? I think he needs one of these
http://inhabitat.com/trotify-makes-your-bike-sound-like-a-galloping-horse/
Hiiii Daaaarbs
@sitrucj The Riverfest lineup is AMAZING! Last year’s was mind-blowing too. Wish I could go TT_TT
krib @ 11:50 At the speeds I go, it would sound like a pony on meth.
So there was a WHOLE LOT MORE going on in that Lauren Mann announcement, so I’ve written a post about it!
https://ourbasementblog.wordpress.com/2016/07/08/its-raining-mann-surprise-album-release-from-2014-searchlight-winner/
I love name-your-price albums but they also make me feel very guilty. D:
I’m planning on buying the bundle when it comes out next month
Benoit,
I was thinking that, too….wonder what it sounds like at speeds over 20 km/hr?
Will wonders ever cease? Newt Gingrich, on the good, understanding side of an issue?
Gingrich: White Americans ‘don’t understand being black in America’
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/287026-gingrich-white-americans-dont-understand-being-black-in-america
A quotation from him: ” “It took me a long time and a number of people talking to me over the years to begin to get a sense of this: If you are a normal, white American, the truth is you don’t understand being black in America and you instinctively underestimate the level of discrimination and the level of additional risk,” Gingrich said. ” Yow.
Is this the daily topic where everyone is hanging out? Just posted on the newer post.
Anyways, Good morning! fun hugs to all! WE NEED A WHOLE LOT MORE LOVE on this planet!
funhug
Yup! This is our home for the day. Got any summer songs to add to next week’s playlist?
I was wondering if the layout in the new home for the site will be clearer what the daily topic we are to comment on is. It is great to get other article posts but there should be some way to say “hey over here!”
How about “The floating bridge of Ennismore” or “Traighli Bay”from Tanglefoot as a summer song
@Darbs @Samara @Funhug Sorry, guys. We’re working on that. We want to bring you as most fresh music news a day as we can 😀
We’ll be doing something to make things clearer. Just what is still TBD.
Scott
I’ve added that to the list.
Hi Scott! Did not know about that band but I just checked one of those songs out. It reminded me of… The Last Saskatchewan Pirate, hahaha.
Long-time R3 commenter? First time caller?
From Associated Press: “BREAKING: Authorities: Man called 911 in south Georgia to report break-in, then ambushed, shot officer who came to investigate.”
America, slow down. What is going on?
Hi Reginula, I’m a first time caller. unfortunately Tanglefoot has disbanded. they had a good run of 25+ years though. They even got played on CBC once.
They are good story tellers and have lots of mostly Canadian stories.
@Scott Great! What’s the best album to get to know them?
Also, are you in Canada? Thanks for finding Our Basement!
I started to type out summer songs from my R3 playlists on Spotify. I ended up just throwing them in a Summer playlist. You can use what you want from it.
http://open.spotify.com/user/darbarspecial/playlist/0UceMgXu8MSDz25aJbwpXK
Hi Scott! Welcome to Our Basement!
or not…whatever. :p
I still have a bunch of work to do on getting all my R3 lists on to Spotify. Most of them were over 100 songs and didn’t all get in initially. I have the text but need to edit and move them still.
So I will have more songs to go from after I get those updated.
Daaaaamn, Darbs! Thanks for going the extra mile.
Listening to the new BadBadNotGood album. I have seen some very complex and artistic covert arts but I have never been as confused as I’m feeling about this one.
New BBNG. Let’s see if I manage to make the spotify thingy work:
http://play.spotify.com/album/6uqcZu1it9k6zz3UVKZzPo
It worked! I am going to check on my spotify. A bunch of the songs are greyed out for some reason.
Looks normal that way. I am taking a listen now.
It’s sounding good to me so far.
WEEKEND ROUND UP! Or is… it too late for that?
Here, just family and boyfriend plans.
Time with the dude going on here too. I am sure we will get some more biking in this weekend. I will be hanging out at the park helping at our Playing for Change booth at AfroFest tomorrow. Lots of stuff going on for that. I am not sure I will make it to the lake for any of the Summer Invasion or not but it is a possibility.
I am annoyed
I saw that Teenage Fanclub are playing in our nations Capital on September 5th and Songkick claimed to have tickets even though it was sold out elsewhere. So I book the accommodation and transport to find that they don’t actually have any tickets either.
Grrrrrrrrr
I have spent the last 2 hours looking for live music in London that night and so far all I can see is the BBC Proms. Not Happy!
@Darbs Lots of things going on indeed! Hope you can make it to Swoonfest! You can always bump into them if you can’t 😛
@Garf Maybe more things will be announced later? What about resellers?
@Reg I am holding out for other events to appear as I am not a fan of going through resellers. If I had a contact in the band (or they were Canadian) I would tweet them to see if I could get on the guest list but I’m sure everyone is trying that now.
If all else fails I’ll take it as a sign and go here again http://www.themapleleaflondon.co.uk/
@Garfy – That sucks. Always tricky booking things. I hope it works out for you.
@reginula – If you were here I would be going for sure! Paying money for Summer Invasion when it isn’t really our thing is a drawback.
@DBS, It wouldn’t be a trip to London without something going wrong 🙂
@Darbs Let me know if me paying for your ticket(s) would make you change your mind. No one should be kept away from cool shows because of that!
But also
WHY AM I NOT THERE?! TT______TT
*Checks Air Canada one last time*
*opens wallet to look for USD 1350*
*Finds candy-less candy wrap*
@Reg, I have $5 Canadian if that helps
@Garf That’s like 75 cents USD, right?
Haha reginula! I do feel bad knowing how much you wish you could be there. I wish you could too. I have seen both Rah Rah and Library Voices many many times though. And what am I doing here still! I need to get going. Have a great weekend!!
I think that’s the £10 note I have in there as well
(I don’t have 1350 USD [That’s like over five paycheques) but I do have 25 CAD. And a hair pin!
Don’t worry, Darbs. Have a lovely weekend!
Thanks for the welcome Regina and Samara, and thanks for adding the song Top of our Lungs.
Probably Full Throated Abandon was one of their best albums.
I out for the weekend. See you Monday.
Oh yeah I’m in Canada a little town in Ontario called Midhurst.
Dang spellcheck sorry Reginula.
Hey TooL, here’s a sweet Can-Con summer song: PATIO LANTERNS by Kim Mitchell.
The Stand (Mother x 2) on R3.
Remember R3?
Kim Mitchell is the Nickelback of the 80s, as far as some indie folks are concerned. Not me, I think he’s fine.
Summer Songs:
Sprawl II (cover) by Hey Ocean! ~ This song completely captures a piece of those gorgeous, warm, humid summer nights of Eastern Canada, when all the world seems full of promise and potential and you realize so many things you didn’t see before.
Lodestar by Sarah Harmer ~ Evokes those warm, wonderful nights spent paddling the lakes of Ontario with people you love.
Heart of the Continent by John K. Samson ~ “While rain and thunder drop and roll then stop short of a storm, leave the air stuck with this waiting to be born”…need I say more?
Emerald Lake, AB by Said The Whale ~ A song about heading up to a lake in Canada so clear you can see right down to the bottom. Also an anthem of R3: “What a fine life we are livin.”
Northern Air by Elliot BROOD ~ An ode to camping, nature, lakes and “let [ting] some trouble sink.” What better way to pass the summer?
Romantics II by Inlet Sounds ~ Evocative and heartbreaking. For some reason “crawl beneath the bedsheets” makes me think of swimming in a lake beneath everything. I’ll never forget how this song came on my iPod at the precise moment when, during my flight from Toronto to Vancouver, the clouds rolled back to reveal that we were flying over the Rocky Mountains. We saw the snowy peaks, the pathways, and the glacial lakes as we flew into the sunset. What a beautiful country we have.
Your Rocky Spine by the Great Lake Swimmers ~ At the Calgary Folkfest, I watched the sun set behind the swaying aspens as Tony Dekker explained that he wrote this song after a visit to Calgary and being struck by Alberta’s awesome beauty.
Mismatched Eyes (Boat Song) by Whitehorse ~ A song written in the wake of a fight on a boat they had, the song captures the swaying of the boat, the forever feeling of the ocean, and their love for each other.
