While we’re in the heights of summer, getting over the hangover of the past weekend’s peak summer festivals, it’s hard to believe it’s already time to be thinking about the next season. A perennial highlight of the fall festival calendar is the Halifax Pop Explosion (HPX,) this year taking place Oct. 19-22, and yesterday they released their line-up.
Headlining the festival is the veteran Newfoundland band Hey Rosetta! who are always a hit. Also in the large type are Basia Bulat, PUP and White Lung, any of whom could be riding high on a Polaris Music Prize win. Holy Fuck, The Barr Brothers and Tuns round out the favourites from the top of the chart, but, as is always the case, there’s plenty of excellent music to be found in the “small print” acts.
Hannah Georgas, Mo Kenney (supported by Symphony Nova Scotia,) Royal Canoe and Nap Eyes are all must-see shows. If you’re looking for something a little noisier, check out Pkew Pkew Pkew, Fake Palms or Monomyth. Folk? Supermoon. Pop? Alana Yorke. Hip hop? City Natives. And of course lots of rock. There is someone performing for almost any genre you can name. (Sorry, no polka… yet.)
HPX is promising more acts will be announced between now and opening night, so keep tuned to their social media for updates. Of course, you can always point your browsers to their website to fill yourself in, as well as grab your tickets or wristbands and subscribe for their mailing list.

Bet you thought you were done with the Maritime FOMO. Two weeks after HPX, Nova Scotia plays host to yet another totally stacked festival, Nova Scotia Music Week (NSMW.) In-Flight Safety (who will be performing) shared their poster yesterday as well. There is some cross-over acts, but a whole lot of other amazing music to be heard as well. Check out this line-up, too.

Good morning!
Hello
Good Morning.
Hewwo.
…et l’écho me répondit…
Ooooh, William & Kate (the royals) to come to Canada in the Fall.
I foresee a royals-and-trudeaus social media orgasm.
East Coast F/ROMO is exactly what I have right now! (FROMO, for when you both fear and regret missing out ;))
but look at those great lineups! Either one of those events would be worth the trip.
Good morning everyone!
Good morning!
Great line ups for the festivals, I loved Nova Scotia when we went and really want to go back again.
ughhhhh KEXP just keeps buffering and never actually plays for me today.
and then I tried to go to cbcmusic to listen to the R3-30 and, lo and behold, you can’t just do that anymore.
I try to be positive, for the most part, but I am having radio woes today 🙁
@Donna – KEXP seems to be working fine for me….maybe a restart?
@Old Abe: ya, I’ve tried that a couple of times, plus a different browser. It’s probably just a local internet speed problem, sigh…
@Loweeda, I found 26 of this weeks R3:30 on Spotify and put them in a playlist
https://play.spotify.com/user/22niri634sh4u573tdji3fmwq/playlist/0chB8Sg1hRE24DPtlZYNAc
well, that’s above and beyond of you, @garfield. Thanks very much!
Hi all – so I just wandered to the CBC music site to give it one last chance, but is it just me or can you not even stream the R3-30 anymore? What is the point?
On another note, went to the Interstellar Rodeo for the first time this weekend. It was amazing. My first festival since i moved back to Canada. Really like the vibe and the smaller size (i.e. one stage)
Ah, the no-auto refresh put my post out of date right away. Thanks for the list garf
I was just complaining about the R3-30, but look what Garfield did for us!
Although I can’t listen to it at work
loweeda, if you have iTunes (even only the “unregistered” use), KEXP is in there, under Internet, then Alternative Rock.
Re R3, I half-guess that Chrome works better than Firefox. That’s the case for me.
Also under the heading of “woes of modern free telecommunications” Bourque.org no longer loads properly on my ‘puter with FF. It does with Chrome, even though C. warns me my OS X is ooooold. And no longer supported.
Off to the Farmer’s market, be back shortly.
I was going to try iTunes, Benoit, but that’s the point when Garfield posted his R3-30 list, so I was saved. Will remember for next time.
hey, one of my faves, Imaginary Cities, just released an EP of outtakes, apparently! that doesn’t mean they’re getting back together though. These are just leftovers.
Today’s Dino Comics is pretty good about aging.

Thanks for the R330 @garfielduk! Firing up now… after my listen to Indie88.
That’s the sound of old people clicking the link.
I would be most stoked for a hometown Garret Mason show during NSMW, holy flying frig that would be amazing, especially if it was at the Engine Room. Let’s just say the liquor would be flowing and the dance floor would be rocking.
I would be willing to create a spotify playlist for each weeks R3:30 and post the link in the comments here if people are interested
I would definitely be interested!
@garfielduk… like the old R3 blog, why don’t you do each Monday’s post with the R3:30 playlist? Even if you only write a sentence or two.
“Here is this week’s CBC Music R3:30 playlist”, post the Spotify embed and you’re done. Thoughts?
@garfielduk, I know @reginula, @topofourlungs @tiffyleeson and others are working hard to do posts, so you doing the Monday one could take the load off a bit.
@Justin, I am a little worried about the copyright issues of using their chart here as our post each Monday along with the fact I would have to wait until they posted the chart before creating the post & playlist for here
Hello all!
Stumbling block after stumbling block in mine and Devin’s lives but we keep on keepin on.
@loweeda – I started to listen to that Imaginary Cities Soundcloud but my computer at home was having a fit. It sounds like Marti will have a new project she is working on. Yay for that!
@Garf – I wouldn’t worry about it. Have you seen the posts on CBC? They seem to borrow stuff.
Listening to your R3:30 playlist Garf. I think I would like Super Baked more if I was super baked.
And apparently everyone is gone. Such is life.
@garfielduk… good point Re R330 post and copyright. I was thinking of that….
yes, let’s not connect this site with CBC Music. In the comments, no problem. But not in ‘writing’
Nope, just busy.
Okie doke.
hey blog! I’m back! It’s been busy round here!
Not to busy here today, it didn’t take long to catch up.
We could make our own Top 30 list instead. Or any number at all, really.
@loweeda… or 10, 20, or 40. Call it the OB30!
@justin: I like OB30!
I vote for the Stars cover of Hold Up to be on the first list.
I could have kept talking to myself. :p
Hi shufle and Shonica.
Oh hey justin and loweeda. I didn’t see you there.
How would OB30 work? People just put in their personal song of the week?
@darbar: yay, new Imaginary Cities tracks! even if they’re not really “new” ones. And Marti has a gig with her new band coming up soon. I won’t get to Wpg to see it, but I hope sometime I will.
@darbar: maybe we could have a poll, like *cough*that other countdown*cough* did? I dunno how that would work, but I’m not a web expert.
I was a little surprised that Fall of Romance was 3 years ago already. I knew I was ready for more Imaginary Citites though.
ahh Garfy did those survey things. Hmm we would have to come up with a bunch of songs for people to vote on.
@darbar: ya, that would really suck if we had to think about songs we like, wouldn’t it? 😉 😉 😉
Haha! I was already looking at ones I would suggest.
The top 5 of R3:30 this week is my music.
Well 4 out of the top 5 anyway. Can you guess which is not one of my favs? It’s alright just not my fav.
What is Marti’s new project called?
Lanikai. Here is the Exclaim article. (I hope the link works for you)
http://exclaim.ca/music/article/imaginary_cities_serve_up_leftovers_ep_before_going_on_indefinite_hiatus?utm_source=facebookpage&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=fbpwall I
This is just me pondering out loud but I have been thinking about pitching the idea for a weekly chart of our own.
I was thinking that each week we could note on a list made up of the top 40 or 50 tracks from the previous week along with whatever was released the previous Friday minus anything over 3 months old.
But the second part was to restrict the people that got a vote to those that supported the site either by providing content on a regular basis or financially via something like patreon.
Thoughts?
@shonica: It’s called Lanikai. They’re playing The Good Will on Friday. here’s the Facebook event for it
Thank you Darbar and Loweeda!
oh, darbar was much faster with that link.
garfield: I see your point about wanting to filter who gets to vote on a chart, because no one wants spam or randoms, but at the same time we don’t want to be toooo exclusive (only a bit :)).
Maybe if we had to sign into something in order to vote? That way people would have to care enough to go through some steps, and only people who did care would do it.
Loweeda,
That’s CA’s sister in the band!
@Garf – Where do you get the first top 40 or 50 from? Are we staying all Canadian? And we are staying newer releases? I like this idea, just working out details. 🙂
It looks like I was a whole minute faster loweeda.
@shonica: Natalie! ha, I’m embarrassed that I didn’t even notice her. What a great combination of Wpg women. Now I really want to hear them.
Who here was against the change to all Canadian content way back when?
@darbar: ya, it takes me at least a minute to remember how to post a link in html. I’m always worried that I’m going to screw up somehow and everyone will see my bad coding mistakes.
@loweeda – I don’t even attempt it so good on you. It is much cleaner that way.
@Darbar, The first weeks chart could be taken from the releases for the previous 3 months or so. Yes it would be a Canadian Indie Chart based on the releases of the previous few months.
shufle, 2:18 I was.
@Shufle, Not me, I can find British and American Music on most radio stations, I chose to listen to R3 because it was Canadian Indie Music
so from my poll, it was 50 – 50
@shufle – I can’t remember how I felt then but I feel like I was hoping for a high percentage of Canadian with a bit of International.
good poll, shufle. Way to keep it even.
I think it would be good to keep things Canadian here, because it would make us different. Or a bit different, anyway.
honestly, it was a pretty small amount of non-Canadian stuff before, anyway.
I really didn’t care one way or the other.
so, if we’re going to have a list, it really should be a single item
because then it would be the
wait for it
wait for it
wait for it……
OB1 !!!!!!!!!
🙂
how do we pick a top 30 when we’re not really a radio station?
124th St Beat,
you’re probably long gone to Saskatchewan by now, but we discovered yesterday that the CBC Music site doesn’t like ad blockers, but it doesn’t TELL you it doesn’t like ad blockers.
If you’re using an adblocker, mark CBC Music as a friendly and see if that does it
@krib, weekly spotify playlists for the new releases?
could get a “what people are listening to” list going
if you did it as a Friday post, you could collect info during the week and post it Friday. Would help out the people creating content, maybe
Are we staying in the realm of Canada here?
As in, if someone asks me what I’m listening to this week, a lot of it would be Americana, by actual American bands
get it? OB1?
😀
Basement Tracks
krib, not for me: with Ghostery turned off, today, on FF, it doesn’t actually offer a “play” button — that wouldn’t work.
where’d that damn tumbleweed get to?
works for me, with AdblockPlus disabled but Ghostery running
in FF
OB1 CANNOTBE
My take… keep it all Canadian. My thoughts/questions are:
1. How is the initial 40 chosen?
2. Then we rank them with a poll?
3. What is the logic in restricting? Although I do think it’s a good idea to have the users authenticated with an account somehow.
@justin: i think authentification would avoid the scenario where, say, one random person discovers this site and decides to troll it by voting for one song a hundred times, or something. Of course we wouldn’t want to “restrict,” but I don’t think we want that to happen, either.
On a different note, I met NVP’s widow the other day. She is going to try and stop in on the blog after she gets back from her trip visiting bloggers.
@shufle – I saw that and then funhug got a visit too. I may run into her in three cities. I am off to Edmonton this weekend, she will be coming through Regina at some point and then I will see her in Winnipeg for Interstellar Rodeo.
I think you’re creating a lot of work for yourselves by trying to create a list of “top” as opposed to “what people are listening to this week”
you’ve got flexibility with the latter. You can throw in retro tracks if you want to, so when Loweeda says for the 100th time she’s listening to some old Stars’ song, you can accommodate that 😛
when’s she in Regina, darbar?
@krib, that’s called a playlist not a chart
yes
and?
I’m just throwing shit out there to see if it sticks
Content creation is a TON of work
@Justin
1. How is the initial 40 chosen?
The first weeks chart could be taken from the releases for the previous 3 months or so. Yes it would be a Canadian Indie Chart based on the releases of the previous few months.
2. Then we rank them with a poll?
Yes
3. What is the logic in restricting? Although I do think it’s a good idea to have the users authenticated with an account somehow.
To vote on a music chart in the real world there is a restricting factor usually in the form of buying the music be it in a physical or digital form. But we can’t do that so we need to find a way to try and stop people gaming the system.
@krib 3:06pm, and the entire reason this conversation started was because someone asked if we should have a chart of our own, we already have playlists.
@krib 3:07pm, I am not asking anyone else to do the work I am trying to find some content that I feel comfortable adding to the site.
well…the conversation started with “Garf how’d you like to…”
and mentioned how it would take some of the load off the other content creators
I’m throwing out suggestions
well, this is interesting…stumbled across it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvpjJgc5IqI
@krib, but at 3:03pm you said ‘ I think you’re creating a lot of work for yourselves by trying to create a list of “top” as opposed to “what people are listening to this week” ‘
“As apposed to” makes it sound like an either or thing not a you could also try.
As we all are busy with our day jobs, I say let’s keep these lists, if we do them, as simple as possible in concept to start. We can always make them ‘highfalutin’ later…. Basically what Nick and Reg have already done is to take suggestions from others and make Spotify playlists. So, in some way formalize that?
yep. because I think you are creating a lot of work for yourselves
but you can do what you want. It’s easy at the start when everyone’s excited about it. It gets tougher to keep it up over time.
Fine, forget I mentioned it
@krib – I am not sure exactly when Liz is here and I can’t find the conversation at the moment. There might be a possibility she is around during RFF though.
It’s a great idea Garf. Just go into it knowing that it will mostly be on you but I know you would be up to the task.
Here’s my daily contribution:
Sweet rockin’ Ottawa pop punkers The Steve Adamyk Band (now with more Sonic Avenues members!) has a new album, it’s streaming on Exclaim/Soundcloud/the internet
http://exclaim.ca/music/article/steve_adamyk_band-graceland_album_stream
Also, I have a thought about what you guys are talking about, not that anyone asked… I don’t understand what the point of creating a “chart” for this website is, nobody would actually care. Just being honest… there are already charts for indie Canadian music from bonafide sources for those who like that sort of thing. Ear Shot being a good one and CBC Radio 3, as you obviously know (if they still make a chart, honestly not really sure). So if you are really wanting to do a Weekly Chart, why not instead do a Chart Roundup or something? Post the weekly Charts, have a little commentary and link a bandcamp/soundcloud/youtube for a select few songs and there you go.
@Darbar, Other than voting I was expecting to do all of the work myself and most of that would be automated
…. post the weekly charts *from those other sources.*
(how do you italics or bold here?)
(it’s not copyright information as you mentioned earlier, and besides all you are doing is referencing it, so you’d link back or what have you.)
I thought probably Garf. 🙂
Nobody voted for the R3-30… what makes you expect people would vote for another “chart”?
Again, not trying to dissuade you from doing something if you really want to do it, just being realistic.
I voted. I am sure there must have been a few others. :p
@Tom, I voted once in a while as well (when there was a song I really liked)
It would have been worth a try at least
well, I certainly ain’t gonna stop you from doing this so knock yourself out!!
What is the difference between 10 of us deciding on the content of a weekly chart here and or 2 people doing it for a “radio station”?
Hello, I’ve been a lurker here for a while now, created my R3 account in 2009 I think. Anyway… I tend to use sites like this to point me to interesting new Canadian music. I’m from Nova Scotia but have lived in Washington State for almost 20 years.
Also I’m an album listener and not so much playlist oriented. I do listen to KEXP and they played a cut from case/lang/veirs
So… along @TomW’s line here’s what I’m currently listening to.
Spotify: http://found.ee/clv_Spotify
iTunes: http://found.ee/clv_AppleMusic
Deeper: http://found.ee/clv_Deezer
@Tom, I don’t think it will be happening now, at least not for a while anyway
(I love being able to correct my comments)
@Garf – I wish I could correct my comments too.
I am heading out. Later gators.
@Darbar, Do you not see the word edit under the dates on you previous comments?
Sorry Loweeda I got pulled away from the basement there for a bit.
I recognized her name once I started to search for more info on the band. I hope I can get there on Friday to see them.
It’s midnight here and I need sleep
g’night folks
@Morgana, from last night
No, I don’t think I will make the IWE event this year (I can’t afford to stay there) but I plan to be there next year.
I just saw an CBCR3 Vancouver instagram post, Grant is filling in for Sheryl MacKay on North by Northeast 6-9am on Radio 1 in BC.
4:07 I believe it is a weekend program for anyone interested in listening.
my first post
Pedro! Hello.
garfield (for tomorrow), I sure don’t see “edit” — only for you, as admin?
Do you think Pedro knows he has to refresh the page?
I am guessing he didn’t .
Hi Chopz!
@Garf – As Benoit said, I think you are the only one that is able to edit.
@Shonica – That is kind of what I figured Grant would be doing and I expect there will be more of that.
More from me tomorrow.
Better now…
@Benoit 5:12 – Me either.
BTW… N2DS2W is either Russ & Cath or Russ or Cath.
I’m sure that tidbit made your evening.
You may address us as N2D.
