Brandon, Manitoba, just keeps getting cooler. After a captivating edition of their long-running Folk festival – which featured a Weakerthans reunion – a new festival is coming to the city of 46,000 inhabitants. The first edition of the Summer Lights Festival is happening on Saturday, September 10th.
The lineup features the likes of Said The Whale – who will be hopefully releasing a new album before 2016 is over –, Joel Plaskett, Terra Lightfoot and Attica Riots. Other performers include Slow Leaves, Begonia, Okay Mann and local singer Hannah Selyn. There will also be a collaborative songwriting circle featuring some of the performers.
Summer Lights Festival will be sharing venue with Brandon Folk Fest, for the event will be happening at the Keystone Centre Grounds. The festival is offering free camping, along with free, locally made, bannock and honey. Food and craft vendors will also join the event.
Advance tickets are available now for $20 for adults and $15 for students, and you can get them now through their website. Make the most of the summer and part of the country you may not be familiar with yet.
Good morning!
Good morning!
I hope to get out Manitoba way one of these summers with the fam, so much happening out your way Shonny!
Bark Lake beach day with some friends to beat the heat & pick some sweetfern & blueberries. 🙂
Are you sick of hearing me praise the posts? Too bad!
Well done @reg! :)xo
I tried to listen to the stR3am this morning after dropping off the Middle Kid for work. Slow Down Molasses which is cool, like them a lot but…but… I even miss the old robots. Went back to KEXP to hear a human voice & cohesive song flow. Sigh.
Still digging CFCR in the AM.
Good morning everyone!
This festival sounds like total fun… I won’t be able to make it though. 🙁
Good morning!
I’m officially back, bahahahahaha.
Came back from the film festival late on Sunday but I’ve been devoting my time to write a bunch of reviews!
@Lucky We really appreciate your support! It means a lot. ❤️
Hello
Welcome back Kotter…er…Reg:)
I’m so grateful you folks have done this, sisters (&brothers) doing it for themselves, fist pump!
Hi @JG! Looks like you had an abundance of puppy love last weekend, sweet:)
Off to make lemonade & hit the beach but 1st wanted to shout out Truro to FT, my best buddy was there this weekend & loved it. Of course she did. 🙂
Hi Garfy!
Bye Garfy!
Hope all is well!:)
Doh…lUcky! (blushes)
lucky, how come you have to rewrite your handle every time? Mine seems to be there auto like.
@BfO 7:40am, I would imagine the Chief Technical Officer for the house has set the browser to not automatically fill in forms automatically such as name and email
Good morning! Heading down to Grand Forks, BC tomorrow. Saturday will be my and my wife’s 10 year wedding anniversary. What do I do?
@Funhug, Contrats
Hello all.
@Funhug happy 10th anniversary! 🙂
@reginula another great post. 🙂 I’m going to add to the chorus of praise for all the Our Basement staff writers and tech support. Thanks always!
Also, Brandon MB seems to be a pretty happening town. Which is good news for Loweeda!
I’ll catch up with you lot again later. Bye for now.
Wow, a site tells me that a 10th wedding anniversary is tin, aluminum and diamond.
Great. Canned food, cookware and unaffordable sparkle.
or
http://www.bdfoods.ie/default.aspx?pid=900
(We call aluminum foil tin foil here)
Congrats Funhug! Happy 10th! I have no idea what you should do but I am thinking that it might have been good to wonder that sooner than 3 days before. hehe
thanks….for nothing!
You are welcome
Hot dogs (tin foil) and beer (aluminum cans) at a baseball game (diamond)!
My pleasure! Ha!
From the heart. Make her feel loved and special. Buying stuff is not as important as showing your love. How you do that is for you to figure out.
Or what Russ said. That works too. haha
darbar @ 10:52 Subterranean HI-OOOOOOOOO!!!
10th anniversary!
Congrats Funhog!
Is it too nosey to ask for how long you were together before that? ’cause it’s even more time.
My former favourite band is about to announce a show in my city.
So I’m going to blast “Your ex-lover is dead” ’cause that’s the best reaction I could come up with, hahaha.
reg @ 11:01 You sassy thing!
@Benoit I could really use a sassiness course.
Or curse.
If you haven’t yet, you really should take a look at Dine Alone Records Summer Sampler. Good shit man. :p
http://dinealonerecords.com/sampler/
Still listening to Stars.
Soft Revolution always makes me think of, uh, the R3 Fam Jam.
Oooooh, cute girl band name! *Assassiness*
Stars is awesome… will spin them up on Spotify here in a bit….
Also too…. just had a great memory of road tripping to London with @topofourlungs @garfielduk and @reginula … I miss you all! (not just those three but all y’all!).
@Justin, It was a great evening, I wish we could do things like that more often
reginula – We met in the tail end of the summer of 2003. I went back to school in NB, dated another girl for awhile and that failed (she dated another dude in that time too!). Then, when I moved back to BC the next summer (April of 2004) we got back together and we’ve been together ever since.
@Justin That was an AMAZING trip. The music, the friends, the Barbers.
@garf remember the poster drama? I just took it to the copy shop and got a larger version which is now framed!
(and the lovely Kathleen Edwards poster @Benoit got me is framed now too. I just need to find the way to secure the nails so it doesn’t fall on my tv, hahaha)
@Funhug That’s a lovely story! You’ve been together for so long.
I love these kind of stories! *swoon*
(I was a hard rock who rolled her eyes and now I’m a fluffy muffin. Bleeergh)
reginula, the best trick — um, the only trick — I’ve ever learned about hanging pictures and having them stay hanging straight, is to use two frame hangers (or nails). Place them apart some *reasonable* distance, given the width of your frame: each maybe halfway between its edge and the mid point. The benefit is a frame that is *much less* subject to shifting; which might be o.k. in Mexico, I figure.
@Benoit The one I got only has a thing to hang it on the middle. That has worked for me in the past with just two nails (I have one the same size above my bed and it hasn’t fallen, not even during earthquakes, haha), but I’m afraid of not getting it right and it crushing the TV to death (again)
@Reg, If you replaced the nail with a screw it has less chance of coming out accidentally
Reginula – Have you heard the story of the first night we moved into a place together? It involves a Corb Lund show at Richards on Richards (now defunct venue in Vancouver) and the song “You’ve been drinking beer all night, it’s time to switch to Whiskey”
Also, move the t.v. away so the picture can guillotine empty air if it falls.
Which it won’t, because you’ll do such a superlative job.
@Garf But for a screw I’d need to drill a bit, right?
House stuff 101
@Funhug I haven’t! Now I’m intrigued!
@Benoit The thing is that I don’t have any other place to move the TV to.
I had three CD racks above it for the longest time, like 3, 4 years. Making up for like 105 CDs above it. Life was good. They were only supported by nails (maybe not the wisest choice…). Just one day something happened and one collapsed and hit the TV and I’ve been afraid ever since.
I mean, it’s a framed poster and not 35 CDs. It’s not as heavy. And it would look very lovely there. Hmmm
Like, I managed to hang all of these: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10204081318249247&set=pb.1113470416.-2207520000.1470251916.&type=3&theater
And they are still there, haven’t fallen.
BUT THE TV
@Reg, That depends on what the wall is made of
Stone or brick, then yes, you would need a drill
Plasterboard (drywall), you could probably just drive the screw in
Wood, depending on how thick it is you could use the nail to create the pilot hole
https://play.spotify.com/track/3OQrl0axbNv0ETuEh2lDXh
I’m meant to know what my walls are made of, right? (._. )
I think it’s concrete. (I’m guessing that’s stone?)
@Reg, If you knock on the wall you can hear if it sounds hollow
@Garf I’m not home right now, but I’ll check. I’m guessing hollow = Drywall, not hollow = Concrete?
(it also has that crappy texture on the wall, I don’t even know the name, but it’s made with paint)
Is/was anyone watching the Canadian soccer ladies?
@Reg. Yes and I am the soccer
We tend to use these to hang pictures over here
http://www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/products/screws_and_fixings/hooks_and_chains/91598/picture_hook_electro_brass_/127739?vat=1&shopping=true&gclid=CjwKEAjwrIa9BRD5_dvqqazMrFESJACdv27G2ZX1kPiHM-4WATDdZutUFnky2hcooIWWUmWFu2GilxoCnWbw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
That’s a long URL
You are the soccer?
I am the Walrus
Nice to meet ya
@garf I have never seen those things, haha. The ones my frame look like tiny teeth, if that says anything.
coocoocachoo
Just found a link to the game and there’s less than 10 minutes left, duh
I am watching the soccer

Alvvays use screw anchors.
Because gravity.
Ah, the thing with teeth. Understood. (I was talking about hanging pictures that have picture wire strung in behind.)
Gravity, Not just a good idea, it’s the law
Gravity. It’s the law.
Rainy days, Mondays, and gravity alvvays get me down.
baseball/softball is returning to the Olympics
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/36968070
Hey, no fair undercutting like that!
:-p
(that was to garf 12:54.)
@Shonica – We had a very noisy one early this morning and probably more tonight. Mackenzie texted me that River Walk wasn’t under water today but I am guessing that will change. Have fun getting christened.
Thanks Darbar, there are seven of us going, the Tarp King’s brother and his partner are visiting for a few days, so we are all going including the “kids” Haha it should be fun!
It sounds like fun. Get the Tarp King to bring a tarp? hehe
G’night folks
Have a great evening Shonica (I’m recording the game)
Thanks Garfy, goodnight.
Night Garfy.
Will I be talking to myself again?
Negative, Darbs.
good afternoon friends.
my body is still tired from three days of dancing at Kaslo Jazz Etc Fest … tired but happy:)
Hi Morgana!
Yay reginula!
Hi Morgana! That sounds wonderful. 🙂
I was very disappointed for Shred Kelly that a massive storm rolled in and the event was shut down for the night. There was a huge Michael Franti and Spearhead crowd and then thunder, lightening and torrential rain. They did play the next afternoon but not the same level of exposure for them.
@reginula @darbar
howdy there ladies!
That sucks! Their live show is amazing and would have done a lot for them, I’m guessing.
it really was too bad for them. they are such troopers though and insisted on playing the next afternoon.
gossip alert … I do believe I detected a baby bump!
@morgana Say whaaaaat
just reporting what i saw … of course i could be wrong and that would be most embarrassing but she had that look.
and then there is this
http://www.nelsonstar.com/entertainment/388892841.html
do follow the link “waved his arms to signal the party was over” for some great photo’s and more of a write up.
@morgana Now that’s a storm.
very intense indeed!
sound boards needed replacing even though the stage did not get hit directly … this year.
@morgana Whaaat? That has happened?
twice actually.
when you put a stage out on the water these things happen.
here is the start of the show before the freaky weather came in
https://www.facebook.com/michaelfranti/videos/10153633431821360/
i found myself in there!
suki says it is time to go for a walk and i agree.
My system is being difficult.
Franti played through a storm here, I was imagining he would be hard to stop. Just before I read your story I was listening to Sam Roberts who will be playing RFF this year and thinking of last time he was here and it got cancelled because of a storm. Here’s hoping that doesn’t happen again. That is too bad Shred Kelly didn’t get to cash in on the momentum of Franti.
And so it goes…
@darbar Oh I do hope that Sam Roberts has better luck with the weather this year! For both of your sakes that is 😉
@darbar how do you share your Spotify playlists here?
Fans of Steely Dan, if any, this is a fine concert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeniR2wP6kg
@b from o it has been a long time but i used to listen to them a lot! i am just building a Spotify playlist to share here but will check out your link tonight …
hey, do you know how to share a Spotify playlist here?
https://open.spotify.com/user/cbcradio3/playlist/7AGo5DI72hUF6QJ64xhFqi
TADA!
morgana, good, bacause I sure don’t!
Ummmmm
Yeah…
D’oh!
I apologize on behalf of the team.
I also apologize
Hello! Are we here again today?
@Benoit thanks for the Steely Dan link. Old Abe’s really into SD lately and apparently his enthusiasm is infectious because I am enjoying them again too! I am going to play that Cincinnati show now, while I do a few chores. I’ll check back here (or wherever you guys settle) in a little bit.
So, yeah.
I’m really sorry. This is the place to hang today (Thursday).
We’ll be back to our regular schedule tomorrow.
Sorryyyyy
Sorry everyone. I’ve been in a slump of late and have had very little drive or motivation to do anything. I dropped the ball on today’s post
The voting is now open for this year’s Mercury Prize. The public vote will put one of the 12 albums through to the final on 15 September.
The remaining five places will be decided by the judging panel.
All six finalists and the winner will be announced at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith.
Here is where you can go to vote and here is a reminder of the nominated albums…
…and BBC Music have created a handy Spotify playlist if you want to have a listen to them.

Good morning!
@zammy hope you feel re-energized soon. This is a lot you all are doing, keeping this purring along! I’ve been pretty slumpy lately too. Jumping in a lake helped, may you find your elixir asap! Sending hugs!:)
@BfO from yesterday, if I’m on my phone I have to type my name every time.
Thanks, maloo. I think I have a problem with overestimating my own capabilities and taking on too much responsibility, then something inevitably slides, I feel guilty and the whole thing tailspins. I am actually heading to the cottage tomorrow to move some furniture so I will definitely jump in the lake.
@zammy I know that pattern all too well! I think a part of me expects to be Wonder Woman. Where’s my invisible plane when I need it? 🙂
Considering you three (and tiffy, four) have been writing blogs on a purely voluntary basis*, I don’t consider that any “ball has been dropped”. It’s a passing hiatus.
* and that you have lives…
@Nick I can relate, and I empathize with you. Remember to be kind to yourself. 🙂
Must agree with BfO – 8:42.
@BfO, I haven’t written any posts since the first day and that was just a generic welcome post (that has since been removed)
Good morning everyone! We could do a post about what is to come out of NXNE next year as Michael Hollet will focus more on it…. MOAR PALLETS!
https://www.thestar.com/entertainment/music/2016/07/28/michael-hollett-leaves-now-to-focus-on-nxne.html
Garf @ 9:00: yet you apologised, earlier…
@BfO 9:25, because I haven’t posted anything or done anything to make sure we have content on a daily basis
Hi everyone. As I posted on Facebook over the weekend, I have started to listen (again) to a website that preceded me finding Radio3 in 2007, http://www.eastcoastcountdown.com. I was a regular listener to that weekly top 10 countdown show, and was given the download code so I could download it onto CDs, and it was here I started discovering all this amazing music, all from Atlantic Canada – or bands with Atlantic Canadian ties, such as Sloan, who haven’t lived in NS in 20 plus years. Give it a listen. And its hosted! There is/was a lot of overlap with the music we heard on Radio3, but there are other artists who weren’t. And it’s not geofenced! What a concept!
Alright @mcfflyer… I just paused my Indie 88 stream and firing up the latest East Coast Countdown podcast.
https://soundcloud.com/eastcoastcountdown
@garfielduk … RE baseball/softball returning to the Olympics in 2020 … dig it! It should have never gone away. The big countries for baseball are the US, Cuba, and Japan (I think). It looks like Canada might have a team too.
http://www.baseball.ca/baseball-to-return-to-olympic-program-in-2020
They are also adding “Surfing, karate, skateboarding and sport climbing”.
Mood Gorning!
@Justin, I couldn’t agree with you more about baseball/softball and I am looking forward to climbing being included but it should be 3 events not one combined as I hear it will be.
I was also glad that softball was back in the Olympics.
Hello all!
I think there have been a couple people offering to do posts. Take them up on it. You don’t have to do it all. I have a couple projects keeping me busy these days but in a couple months I would be interested in doing a playlist theme post. There are wordy people that could contribute some interesting articles. hehe
We just got a table at the Casino Show Lounge to watch The Hip broadcast on the 20th. I was very much wishing my sister was with me at the Edmonton show as we went together to a couple other shows. At least we will have tha broadcast.
WOOOOHOOOOOO! R3 is playing me a new Black Mountain song.
@DarBar…. for multiple people doing posts…. the geek term… “crowdsourcing”. Each person has their own area of expertise on which they could write about. This could expand the breadth of appeal to the site to new visitors.
If anyone is interested in writing for us please email ourbasementblog@gmail.com with the subject “I would work for free”
As @garfielduk says!
Anyone else have plans for watching The Hip broadcast? It should be an amazing show to see. That hometown crowd is going to be loud and there will be tears. Lots of tears.
@DBS, I hope to watch it
So how about that weather huh? *shrug*
We were due to have a thunderstorm this evening but it never arrived
We have some mild weather in Regina today. I see there are tornado watches between Edmonton and Saskatoon for later today.
We have a “Yellow Alert for Wind in effect from Sunday, 5:00 AM BST until Sunday, 7:00 PM BST”
http://www.accuweather.com/en/gb/houghton-le-spring/dh4-4/weather-warnings/325004
Crazy weather everywhere! We had high winds yesterday. A bunch more branches to be cleaned up in my yard. I do like the dead stuff getting shaken out of the trees though.
I’ll have to keep my eyes open for broken roof slates over the weekend
Sunny and no clouds with a light breeze here in Portland. 28C 82F, kick ass.
@DarBar … RE dead stuff shaken out == less pruning == more bike riding!
so many great convo’s and links to follow you guys!
lovin’ it here regardless of perceived ball droppage.
you are all the best:)
Hi Morgana
You bet justin! I had a flat last week but I am back on track now.
Hi morgana! I see you figured out getting your playlist on here. hehe. I plan to check that out but I am on my pre-folk fest list right now. I just heard from Liz and she is in town. I look forward to meeting her.
livestream of an Iron Maiden show happening right now: http://stream.wacken.com/
Looking forward to being in Ottawa this weekend. Not looking forward to driving there in rush hour traffic tomorrow.
Hi Garfy. Have you joined your fellow countrymen in their time zone yet?
@darbar I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to be linking or embedding or what so I just stumbled around in the dark until it worked.
Please pass on a hello to Liz. I will be seeing Dale in a few weeks as well. They are linked in my mind as we all got together in Vancouver for pre show dinner and drinks … then we splintered into different groups for different shows.
@Morgana, My sleep pattern has returned to normal just in time for the Olympics to mess it up again
@garfielduk ah, the perils of staying in touch with what is going on globally! I am so tied to the needs of my garden, family, home and me that I have barely noticed what the athletes of the world are up to.
i may branch out a bit next weekend and go for some culture other than music (gasp!)
http://cbculturetour.com
@mcfflyer hey, thanks for the podcasts. I am listening to the East Coast Countdown now. I still think you would be a great candidate to contribute articles to ourbasement …
@justingrady thanks for making it oh so easy for me to click and listen.
I am OK with being spoon fed apparently;)
I am looking forward to Regina Folk Fest this weekend and then Interstellar Rodeo next weekend. Woot!
I am trying to get people connected for RFF. Krib are you around?
g’night folks
Night Garfy.
It’s too early for the rest of you to have gone to bed!
not in bed, just trying to write up a time line. taking a few crappy weeks of a shit storm of my life and make it all linear and clear.
@darbar Regina Folk and Interstellar!! You are going to be full to bursting:)
Still around.
@b from o have you managed to get the secondary family cottage on the real estate market? that was the plan wasn’t it …
Hi!
Yes it was The Hip last weekend in Edmonton, RFF this weekend, Interstellar in Winnipeg next weekend and The Hip broadcast on the 20th before heading off for a week camping trip. August is a busy month and I have projects to work on in the down time. Ha! I like this kind of busy though.
Devin has another procedure on the 16th and hopefully he will be all good for camping.
morgana, as a matter of fact, it sold yesterday! For only a little less than the asking price.
@darbar Wow, that is one full dance card there!
Devon will be fine, he doesn’t want to miss any of that party line up:)
@b from o well conrats!! here is to more bike rides and less land clearing.
Thanks for that encouragement, Morgana, but I really don’t think I have much to contribute to this blog. I really don’t know that much about the Canadian indie scene, and now, I’m three years separated from even visiting Canada.
@mcfflyer i see it as a win win actually. you can pull out some “i knew them when” stories for us plus do some research to find out what they are up to know thus reconnecting you.
Congrats Benoit.
I am happy with my choices morgana. 🙂
I like your thinking morgana. It is something to consider Lee. 🙂
i gave suki the dog a big bath and brush out this morning. she has been steam drying in the yard for a few hours now. she is so puffy and clean but the trouble is that her dog bed is looking so nasty now … fine! more laundry for me.
@darbar I am glad you agree.
One thing leads to another. That is why I just don’t even start. :p
Having said that, I am going home to try to fit a week of stuff into one night. Wish me luck.
Have a great weekend!
@darbar so looking forward to your stories and playlists from your musical adventures!
Oops, I’ve fallen into a Spoon rabbithole. Gimme Fiction.
@b from o Oh fork! Sorry, I have no fiction for you:(
all i have is recipes for food i am making for the long drive to, along and back from the Dempster Highway, maps for the afore mentioned adventure and WCB paperwork.
