The 47th annual Regina Folk Fest, which took place last weekend (August 5-7,) brought a collection of marvellous musicians from across the country and beyond to the Queen City.
The lineup for the 2016 edition, included Sam Roberts Band, The Strumbellas and The Wet Secrets, among others. This festival has been a staple of the Saskatchewan arts and Canadian music for decades and this year’s edition brought further proof.
Here are some pictures of Regina Folk Fest 2016.
Hello goodbye. Cottage.
Good morning!
Hello
Hey folks. How’s it going?
Does anyone know of any Canadian tracks with coffee in the title? It’s for a playlist I am trying to create
Kapuskasing Coffee-Justin Rutledge
Good morning!
Second Cup of Coffee-Gordon Lightfoot
Thank you Shonica (for both the images above and that suggestion) I now have 13 tracks in my
Top 12 Canadian Tracks With Coffee In The Title playlist
Jody Glenham did one, let me think…
Coffee Soaked?
I would like to hear your list Garfy.
Yup!

CBC 404 is the new Rick Roll.
Coffee Girl — The Hip
@Shonica, It is my attempt to try and create some content so I hope it will be used this week or next. I would like it to be a regular item.
Garfy,
Okay, I can wait.
Good morning.
Your Canadian coffee playlist should definitely include one of those asinine “I like my coffee crisp” ads :p.
@Anon 7:09am, It’s not available on Spotify (in the UK at least)
@Loozt 7:17am, I searched Spotify for Coffee Crisp but there was nothing (again in the UK)

@garfielduk: Yeah, that’s the one. I think I remember one taking place in a hockey arena too.
Bonus from the “related” videos:

In unrelated news, I want a coffee crisp
(I like Lego, so YouTube likes to distract me with Lego videos all the time)
Good morning everyone! Gray here in Portland today….
Hey, you guyyyyyyz
(I was away, but now I am back)
Nice RFF pics, Shonica! It was weird not to be there this year.
loweeda, We missed you. Are you coming in for Interstellar?
I sure am, Shonica! Will you guys be there? And at Pat’s party, I hope?
loweeda,
It was strange to be at Regina Folk fest without some of the regular attendees like you, TRH, Tom, and also Krib didn’t make it either. We did meet Neil’s partner Liz on Friday and had dinner and beverages with her and Jay(GibsonGuitar77) before the heading to the festival together. She was only there for Friday night of the RFF.
loweeda,
I have a weekend pass, chrispyprotools has a Saturday pass and we are not sure what the Tarp King doing, haha. I should be able to get to Pat’s party too.
I’m always getting an error loading message when the R3 stream stops suddenly. Is it just me and my old iPad mini?
@Shonica, I have R3 running through a VPN and will let you know if it happens to me. Did you take any notice of what the error message said?
Some of the great Saskatchewan artists I saw this weekend, I had not known much about until now.
Megan Nash(SK) http://www.megannash.ca
Etienne Fletcher(SK) from Indigo Joseph https://soundcloud.com/etienne-fletcher
Eric Taylor(SK) http://www.erictaylormusic.ca
Nick Fay & The Deputies(SK) https://nickfaye.bandcamp.com
Ayrad(QC) https://ayradband.bandcamp.com
These guys did a workshop with The Barr Brothers, Twin Bandit and Bobby Bazini and it was incredible! The violin player, Anit Ghosh, jumped in on everyone songs right away, he was so good . It was an amazing way to start our Saturday.
Hello Internetians,
Great pics from RFF shonica! It looked like a fun time again this year, I was sorry to miss it. I ended up working all weekend… gotta make hay while the sun shines, or something like that.
I’m thinking I might go for one of the Interstellar nights, probably the Saturday, but there is also a camping trip to pinawa being talked about that ages ago I had said I was down for, and forgot until yesterday when it came up again. So, we shall see. If I’m not camping in the wilds, I’ll come party at Pat’s too for sure.
I had plans to go to Julie Doiron on Sunday night but then, same old same old – work. Had to be up and on the move at 5 am so a night out beforehand didn’t really make sense.
What was your Regina Folk Fest highlight/standout?
wow, Shonica, Kirby didn’t make it to RFF at all? I thought he was at least going to be there for Sat/Sun. ah well, his loss 😉
I look forward to seeing you all in a few days. It’s going to be a good Rodeo!
I have typed up two comments that have disappear when I click Post Comment : (
I had to dig to find the R3 stream on the updated CBC Music app! But I found it and listened for the first time in a while the other day. It was weird hearing Grant intro a featurette thing. “Before They Were Musicians” or whatever it was called.
On a related note, I am really glad for Grant Lawrence that he is back in the saddle as it were. He should be hosting a radio show and it’s pleasing to know that he is, even if it’s Radio 1 and in BC so I would never hear it. Lots of people are hearing it though and he’s got his platform to shout from. And that’s good. (And yes I’m aware I could listen online but I don’t even listen to my local CBC Radio so tuning in for a show provinces away is probably not gonna happen!)
garfieldUK, for your coffee playlist (although Lagwagon is American, not Canadian, and the song is old so it likely doesn’t fit the specs).
“Mr. Coffee” by Lagwagon. I used to pump this tape all the time back in high school.

@FT, The tracks age wouldn’t rule it out but I wanted to keep the playlist Canadian but if you find a Canadian doing a cover I would be willing to add it
We had the most incredible Saturday morning workshop with The Barr Brothers(love those guys) and Ayrad (QC) https://ayradband.bandcamp.com The violin player Anit Ghosh jumped in on everyones songs right away, he was so, so good. The others in the workshop were Twin Bandit(BC) and Bobby Bazini(QC) Such a great start to our Saturday.
I really liked SK artists Megan Nash and Etienne Fletcher
loweeda,
No, not at all. I talked with his brother on Sunday and he had been trying to sell Krib’s pass.
Hello all! I am back at my real job after my RFF weekend. It was a great weekend (other than some health issues). I am glad you got some photos Shonica as I didn’t take a single one all weekend.
Hi Darbar,
Hope you’re feeling better soon. You have another awesome weekend of music coming up!
Grant has a new show now? On a real station? Cool.
Haha Darbar, I said awesome, sorry.
I was trying to remember, after Sunday night’s Strumbellas set, where I’ve heard someone say “they’re so awesome” as much as the chatty Barbie & Ken couple I was beside at the RFF. .
@Loozr, Grant is guest hosting on CBC R1 on weekend mornings in BC
BOW announces festival line up! http://breakoutwest.ca/fest/blog/breakout-west-announces-2016-festival-line/
Okay I’m coming back to Regina in October, The Matinee are playing BOW!
@Shonica – My head is still spinny, but my leg is looking a lot better. I am very much looking forward to another great weekend of music and R3 hangs.
Woot!
Darbar, I think we may have convinced Jay to come to Interstellar! He just needs to make arrangements for the dog.
Darbar,
We may have also convinced Jenelle, on Monday morning she came and had breakfast with us at 8 am, but I think she was still not awake enough to know what she was committing too. hahaha
I went to Halifax on vacation last week, and on Wordburglar’s recommendation, got myself a donair from Tony’s on Robie. On the way there we cut across the Citadel Hill, where a bunch of people were standing around as if they were waiting for someting. When I saw someone plugging their ears, I remembered his advice that if you hear a boom from the Citadel, that just means it’s noon, and I checked the time and sure enough it was 11:59. “Hey”, I said to my wife, “I think they’re abou–” KABOOM!.
Thanks, Worburglar!
@Shonica – I hope they both make it! That would be fantastic!
I was back at the park yesterday at 10 am to help with clean up. I am sure glad that thunderstorm waited until the fest was over to happen.
@Loozrboy – Haha! Thanks for sharing that story. Love that Wordburglar helped you out.
Darbar
Here is that exercise I told you about, if it is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo that is affecting you.

With @grant hosting on R1 on the weekends… I am wondering if the CBC knows what to do with him; of course Grant has a say too. As we know he’s an incredible talent but the Ceeb may not have the quality of a show to match him. If Shad weren’t on Q that’d be cool, if Grant would want it and he could stay in Van. Although I’d not want Shad to get sidelined either.
Thanks Shonica. I will check it out.
Justin,
Grant fills in on that show all the time when the regular host goes on vacation.
I was also in St. John’s on the same weekend as their George St festival. Didn’t go to any of the shows, but I heard Rapartee and Arkells wafting out. (Most of the other nights seemed to be much older acts).
Coffee:
Coffee Girl by The Tragically Hip
No Coffee by Betty Bonifessi
There Might Be Coffee by Deadmau5
One More Cup of Coffee by Frazey Ford
My Coffee’s Getting Cold by my friend Sharon Gudereit 🙂
Thanks DBS, I have added the ones I can find on spotify
Can you spot the difference between the BBC medal table and the CBC version?
Definitely a different way of sorting them. What are you referring to?
The CBC are ranking by total medals won, giving Gold, Silver and Bronze the same value just to make Canada appear further up the table
That is one way to interpret it I guess. Works for me.
I don’t think any Olympian would agree with you
So, I’m a car geek reading about a crossover (yay families and kid haulers!)… look closely at the photos, the writer is a CBC Radio 3 fan! http://truckyeah.jalopnik.com/the-2017-mazda-cx-9-is-way-more-fun-than-any-big-crosso-1784193920
@Garf – Medal counts matter too but mostly I don’t care.
Nice Justin. We are everywhere!
loozerboy – hey right on! I know Tony’s all too well probably, as i used to live a hop skip and a jump from it. Have had their slices at all hours. (have never been a huge donair guy, although I do like them)
Anyway, kinda cool to hear ol’ Word Burgie could help a brother out!!!
