hello
Hello.
Uhm, does anyone understand the order on this lineup?
When did Mariachi Ghost get that big? Rosie and the riveters quite a few lines above Rah Rah?
?_?
@Reg, I have never understood festival set scheduling
It could be that Rosie & The Riveters are headlining the second stage but Rah Rah are the penultimate band on the main stage
Speaking of music: Grant and the Smugglers?
And good morning!
Hello!
I am in the West, but not Breaking Out–as far as I know.
Good Morning
Good morning!
Is Elon Musk’s Hyperloop running yet?!
Rahhhh Rahhhhhh! :'(
Good morning, friends.
It’s definitely mid-summer here on southern Georgian Bay. HOT! and sunny. 30ish degrees (plus some with the humidity) expected today. I have battened the hatches and hope to keep the house fairly dark and cool…
For nonbookoffacers among you, the meaning of mcfflyer’s post: (proudly copied)

The Smugglers will be performing our first gig in well over a decade in early 2017. Date / city / country to be announced later this month.
Thanks, Benoit. I thought everyone would have known what I was talking about. Guess not.
Samara, I’m doing the same. Not to “best” you (’cause it’s not even “better”), but we’re supposed to get 33 or 35 today (different weatherguessers); and 35 again tomorrow, before it “cools” to the 27s. I may go to the cottage tomorrow (again, went yesterday) —-> not to do work, but to escape the heat.
Happily Grant shares much of his news on Instagram and Twitter (as well as Facebook) so I don’t miss too much from him — except all the conversation surrounding the news… which mostly happens on Facebook, I suppose…
It will be fun to hear the modern Smugglers. I wonder if their reunion will coincide with Grant’s book release?
I think many people know about the Smugglers apparent reunion. I suspect it will just be a one-off show in Vancouver, though, so while it’s interesting and I’m glad they’re doing it, it’s going to be hard for a lot of us to see it, probably.
@Benoit yikes you are certainly warmer than we are! Perhaps that’s Georgian Bay’s doing… cooling the air just a smidge. It’s great that you have your cottage to escape to away from concrete and glass. Urban areas are often much hotter than countryside/shoreline.
I’ll be back later but in case I forget to remind you guys then, the Perseid meteor shower is peaking this week so keep looking up at night! You might catch a good spray of “falling stars”.
I’m guessing the Smugglers show will have to do Grant’s book release.
reginula, garfieldUK – re: the order of names on the poster: BoW is, or in my experience, was, more of an industry event like how CMW was/is. There is no “main stage” or “second stage” (unless that has changed) but it’s usually more in the vein of showcases happening at various bars and venues around town, with the awards gala being the big ta-da at the end.
That said, I had a great time in Regina at BoW in 2012(?) and saw a show or two in Winnipeg when it was here last year. Or the year before? My memory is terrible.
As for the Mariachi Ghost, they are pretty reasonably well known on the prairies, as far as I know, they can play Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina, Edmonton, etc. and do quite well.
That’s my take on it.
I was going to coment on Grant’s Smugglers Reunion status – The who? But I didn’t as I’m practicing politeness.
Srsly though, the smugglers weren’t really a band on my radar in the late 90s, which is kind of surprising as 1994-ish was when I started really getting into Can-Con rock and Roll and by 1999 when the Smugglers were really at their peak, I was more into skate punk but i feel like I should have at least known about them. But I didn’t for whatever reason. Perhaps their ads in the back of exclaim or vice or whatever mags I was reading at the time were too small.
Good morning! How is everyone today?
ya, I never knew about The Smugglers in a musical sense back then, either. The only reason I even knew the band existed was because a guy named Grant Lawrence used to phone in to the Nightlines radio show on CBC Radio 1 and talk to David Wisdom about his tour exploits.
and speaking of the order of names on the poster for BoW – I’ve never even heard of Lexi Strait or David Morin. So if anyone could tell me what their all aboot, have at ‘er.
Yes it’s hawt here too. Definitely better than the city! The breeze, even though quite hot, is nice in the shade. Definitely a lake day, when i can muster the energy.
Re:Smugglers I’m holding on to the hope that they’ll play in The County…maybe…
Donna, I think part of me not really being awares of the smugglers is that I was a little on the younger side at the time of their popularity.
Really, I think I only came to be aware of them when I looked into Grant Lawrence’s resume as it were, when he was hosting Radio 3.
That seems reasonable, Tom. Well, anyway, we know about those Smugglers now.
I also know that Japandroids are playing some shows again and that makes me happy. It makes me sad that I won’t see any of them, though. It’s an emotional roller-coaster over here this morning.
That’s good news about the Japandroids.
I wonder why they haven’t received a wrath of politically correct social justice re: their “potentially racist” name? As far as I know, neither of the members are of Japanese heritage. maybe they are though, I certainly don’t know. I don’t find the name offensive, but then, I didn’t find Black Pussy or Viet Cong to be offensive either. I suppose I can see WHY some were offended.
@Loweeda I don’t know, you can always fly out for a Japandroids show.
Not necessarily the one closest to you but not the one across the ocean.
You can have my bed. 😉
The lineup order:
That’s what I understood from this festival, it being a NXNE, bar-hoping style. Maybe those acts are bigger in that region now? (Maybe, say, The Mariachi Ghost is blowing up in the Prairies but the Matinee is an unknown thing given it’s a Vancouver band? And uh, Rah Rah. A juno nominated band [Not biased, eh?])I looked up Lexi and she has a 1000 FB fans unless I didn’t check properly.
No clue, to be honest.
ya, Regina, I really considered going to Toronto for the Japandroids show, but I’m going to save my pennies, I think. Hopefully this means the band is just warming up and I’ll get to see them sometime soon. they’re definitely on my bucket list.
I know nothing of Lexi Strate or David Morin either. There are bands that seem well known by R3ers but other bands/artists that are better known at home. Rosie and The Riveters and The Dead South have been rising in local popularity for instance.
I think that Radio 3 provided a false economy to it’s listeners as to who or what were regionally popular acts vs bands trying to get exposure on the national stage. Canada is a very regional country and while Radio 3 did some good, their music format dictated that certain scenes got exposure while others didn’t. Nothing wrong with that, it’s the way radio works – you can’t play everything. I mean, how big was Radio 3’s listening audience anyway? I don’t know, but lets just say out of 10 people in Regina, maybe 1 had ever listened to Radio 3. A band like The Matinee, how well do they really draw in Regina? I know that when I lived there, they played at O’Hanlons and it wasn’t exactly packed. (The Matinees are the ones that sound like Supertramp right?)
Anyway, whatever. Like I said, Break Out West is more of a music industry festival than a ‘festival’ festival. Still, lots of fun and music to be had, and elbows to be rubbed. And over priced pints of beer because hey, it’s Regina!
I always think Bend Sinister sounds like Supertramp.
I wonder if Grant Lawrence will be hosting the awards gala again? That seemed to be his job to lose. Both times I’ve been, he was hosting. The “big” acts during the gala were Rah Rah in Regina and Dan Mangan in Winnipeg. Also, Fred Penner got a huge salute in Winnipeg, and his kids joined on stage and sang too. And the whole audience in the theater sang The Cat Came Back.
Someone must have been chopping onions at that exact same time.
Bend Sinister! Not the Matinee. Sorry, Matinee.
Classified has a new song out. I don’t love it, the Elijah guy’s voice is shitty in my opinion. Such is the style of the times. Class’ verses are strong and positive messages as usual. This one seems tailor made for Z99 or whatever the pop station in your town is called.

Against Me have a new song too. It’s non Canadian, but whatever, I’m posting it. It’s got a real chugging rhythm and in a weird way, sounds a bit like a toned down Dropkick Murphy’s song, minus the bagpipes. I like it upon first listen, but then, I like Against Me so it’s not a shocker that I would like this.

I think Against Me has raised it’s Canadian points count since Laura Jane Grace is Coeur de Pirate’s bae.
That being said, I don’t even know how to pronounce “bae”. let alone where it came from. Bay? Hahaha
I’ve made 4 posts in a row, let’s make it 5! Then I will leave you all alone. Since you guys are into the Spotify here, Haligonian songstress Jenn Grant made a Spotify playlist of quiet and peaceful songs. I don’t have spotify so I’m just sharing because it might be appreciated here.

Tom shared a Spotify playlist without having Spotify. Is he magic?
I also enjoy Against Me! And many other non-Canadian bands. I am not ashamed.
There is no problem sharing non Canadian music on here at all. Main posts and daily topic playlists they are probably refraining from too much non Canadian but otherwise it’s all good!
Daaaaarbs
*points out BOW lineup*
WHO DIS
Just fired up that playlist @Tom…
That playlist has names I love on it, such as Arvo Part, Max Richter, and Olafur Arnalds. Davoud Davies and Eric Adams would like it, too, I bet.

loweeda, 10:37, (am i doing that right?)
re: non canadiana – Hey, no shame! we like what we like. Although with music, as with food and other products in life, i like to encourage and support the local or canadian businesses that I like, i.e. canadian musicians, wherever I can.
And I’m certainly not magic – I just copied a link that was on Jenn Grant’s facebook and it embedded as a playlist here so that’s cool! I lke how this website automatically puts the youtube videos and soundcloud thingers right in the comment for you. I can’t listen to the spotify playlist without having spotify… which I used to have on my phone but I uninstalled it last winter because I honestly didn’t like it that much. That said, it was the free version so you couldn’t directly play the song you were searching for and there were ads, etc.
Ohhhh!
Thx Russ!:)
I was just joking, actually, Tom, but I’m going to keep perpetuating the idea that you’re magic.
And ya, I couldn’t abide even one day of free Spotify. Too annoying. Plus, it’s nice to think of musicians getting at least a 1/4 of a cent or so for every song you listen to.
I mean, yes… yes i am magic.
*poof*
*claps!
Astonishing!
Not many comments since I left 3 or 4 hours ago.
@reginula – Is there a DIS on there or are you using the slang? I don’t know all of them but there are a bunch of local artists I am aware of.
Tom/loweeda – I was liking Spotify on my computer and then I tried the phone app. Nope don’t like that. Where do artists get a 1/4 of a cent or so? What streaming service should I be using?
I will be watching The Hip broadcast at the Show Lounge on the 20th. It should be a good one.
stories, pic’s playlists … we have it all here!
i have missed a few days here so i will have some back reading that i am really looking forward to once the family leaves tomorrow.
Artists for this years TIFF were announced as well. http://www.canadianmusiccafe.com/
I think I am going to be on the Dempster Highway on Aug 20th … I would be very excited if I could find some place to watch The Hip show … but I am not holding my breath.
That could be a fun post for us; “where were you when … and supply a photo.”
@magic tom
thanks for the playlist. i have a final pack to do into our VW Westfalia tonight and music ALVVAYS helps 🙂
Oh, and contrats to Belle Game for singing to A&C!
I was really wishing I had a VW Westfalia for our upcoming camping trip.
morgana, 3:04: Does the CBC’s R1 come in along the Dempster Highway? “The Kingston show will begin at 8:30 p.m. ET, and will be broadcast and streamed — commercial free — on CBC Television, CBC Radio One, CBC Radio 2, cbcmusic.ca and CBC’s YouTube channels.”
From the June 17 announcement, as reported in http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/tragically-hip-last-concert-cbc-1.3639948
Afternoon. I am following the Friends of CBC FB page, and with regards to the Candy Palmeteer show on R1, whoa, talk about harsh comments. But it just wasn’t her show, but the overall drift of the CBC, and there were lots of “I’ve long since given up on Radio2”, and “Shad sucks on ‘q'”, and so on. And these are the friends of CBC? In scanning the comments on this one post that originated in May, not one mention of Radio3, and one of my biggest gripes about it: no one knew it existed.
@b from o i have no idea if i will be able to pick up a cbc signal on the dempster but i will be happy to report back and let you know in a few weeks. thanks for all of the details/options on how i may be able to access the hip concert. time will tell.
@mcfflyer i quickly gave up on the Friends of the CBC FB page due to it’s negativity. there is enough of that every time i step out of my front/back door, i do not need a portal to it!
@darbar for festivals the VW becomes a glamping sort of situation but for this trip it is all about spare tires, hoses and clamps, fire wood and water and fuel. i do still have my cylinder in the kitchen cupboard with multiple spices and salts but it is mostly a very different type of trip and subsequently the pack is very different.
