Duotang have released their first full-length album “New Occupation” since 2001. Seeing how Calgary was the birthplace of the band’s breakup (during an argument turned fist fight over a food order), it stands to reason that they would launch a Western Canadian tour promoting the album from the very same city.

Hello
Good morning!
Great piece, Garfy.
Good morning. I also enjoyed reading up on Duotang.
Thank you
Good morning! Great article Garfield!
I’m (actually) tuned in to R3 this ayem. It played Kroy. (She’ll be in town soon, twice, a couple of weeks apart. Nice ofr me, because I’ll miss her the first time, on account of TUNS.)
Now it’s Black Mountain that’s gotten all their gear ripped off, in Gothenburg. (Facebook)
WTAF???
Yeah. Let’s see how this copy pastes.

Hey Gothenburg! We just got ripped off in your city. Please let us know if you run across the following gear: Moog Source, Manikin Memotron, Korg CX-3 organ, Gibson Les Paul, Gibson SG, Fender Jazzmaster, 2 pedal boards, etc. Fuck….
(Hmm, not bad.)
I’m pretty glad I saw that reunion show at GWSC (it was fantastic) as their next show here is on the night of my company’s Christmas party. Boo. This is happening a lot in the next while, I need to invent a way to be in two places at once.
They’re playing here at Amigos. Dec 3
Also, there’s a sentence up there that’s missing a word, I think. I think the word is “sound”

And krib wins the prize for spotting one of my deliberate mistakes, Contrats
…or “vibe”.
I found another! Mistake, “me” deliberate mistakes? This is like Easter Egg hunting!

Hi kids. Quiet here today.
On Monday, I traded emails with Tyler Bancroft of Said The Whale that covered the new music they’re making, his work at the record label, about a US tour that apparently the Zolas have canceled, and of course, being a new dad. In our conversation, I told him of my decline of interest in Canadian bands thanks in great part to CBC’s geogencing of Radio3. His response (direct quote), “Hold on are you serious – CBC Radio 3 is geoblocked in the US?????” And so it appears that the bands that helped make up Radio3 what it was didn’t even know that the music that they push to get on Radio3 doesn’t escape from Canada. So much for breaking new sound. So much for being a way for their music to cross the border.
But last night while I was making dinner, I listened to all of “4 Nights at Palais Royale”, Sloan’s 1999 double album. Back when they were riding high.
Carry on.
@mcfflyer… along that line… when I hung out with JPNSGRLS a couple weeks ago they didn’t (or at least the band member) know what R3 was, as in, never heard of it, and I know R3 played them … that was a bummer.
@mcfflyer I thoroughly enjoyed, “a night with said the whale” last fall. Really looking forward to a new release. A solo project too of course. I am glad to hear of the progress.
@Justin – that was one of my biggest gripes over CBC’s handling of Radio3 – no advertising, no getting the word out about that it existed and what it was doing. Instead, there wasn’t enough word of mouth from us to let people know, and it essentially withered on the vine for a total lack of PROMOTION! The death of R3 was a self fulfilling result since nothing was done to help it grow and expand. I wouldn’t be surprised that even during the “golden days” of Radio3, that would be about 2009, that many/most bands in Canada may have known about “New Music Canada”, but not about Radio3.
new to my ears
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_U8qvJuj_s&app=desktop
@mccflyer…. I’d agree with you on that, the lack of promotion. I found R3 while tooling around in iTunes radio. As I was a Canada geek already I def gave it a listen. Was hooked from then on, Craig, Grant, Lana, and others, all awesome. Pedro could be an ass but I think that was his schtick.
mcfflyer, I suspect that a lot of that had to do with — outside R3 being the distinctly “poor cousin on the web” — the fact that anglo CBC is very much centred in Toronto*, whereas R3 was very much a Vancouver critter. So it never had, in effect, enough pull in Toronto to get other, more important ‘services’ to promote it even a little.
*… and franco Radio-Canada in Montreal, though both have admin. in Ottawa.
Solomon was right; there is nothing new under the sun.
So they also recently killed that CBC Radio 3 Group on FB, I wonder what some of them have to say about that? Wasn’t it Mark M’s way of helping the community?
We should start a petition for them to remove CBC Radio 3 branding from CBC Music. Call the stream something else, call everything they are branding as Radio3 as something else. Just wipe it from that site.
Mark, they’ll whore it to death. They’re STILL using RoboLana and RoboGrant to “introduce” the “before they were famous”, or whatever, items. (Oh, they’ve got the right, it just seems false.)
I couldn’t tell you the last time I listened to R3 even though I have a VPN that would allow me to access it.
I would love to have access to some of the numbers for R3 (listener, costs, etc)
@Wynn… we could do that petition but don’t think it matters. Moving forward for Canadian Indie promotion, there is us here, Our Basement, Russ and Cathleen’s site http://www.n2ds2w.com/, and the one in Vancouver who a few R3’ers run … which I forget. And Vancouver is Awesome (http://vancouverisawesome.com/category/music/) which CMAC writes for as a music editor.
@Justin CMac quit VIA a while ago (before we launched) and joined Kirk of Doom at 3am Reverlations
what about the music blog thing for Searchlight, all those years ago, before Searchlight was co-opted and turned into yet another boring ol’ music popularity contest?

I was just meandering around 3AM Revelations the other day. I watched a video that i found quite entertaining
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jlfjNJO6Rg
weird canada won that, right?
AH! That was it 3am Revelations… the one I was forgetting. CMAC just did a post yesterday about Hannah Georgas . http://www.3amrevelations.com/
I still listen to R3 some but not like I used to.
Canadian Beats seems like an interesting blog. http://canadianbeats.ca/
Not having listened to R3 in several weeks, but now two days running, I’m enjoying the mix of artists I don’t hear played elsewhere, and of straight-up old hits like Legs Give Out, by We Are the City.
@krib, yeah I think Weird Canada won the blog edition
I love the Dan’s Space Van videos.
@darbar.. Canadian Beats really has the exact same goals as we do here…. thank you. It says it has 15 contributors.
I think back then kn0ttyn3rb had a blog that’s probably not maintained anymore, and the Moe and Marty show may still have been going
Look at this…. Hmm. http://www.allcanadianradio.com/
@krib, I’m not sure if the Moe and Martin show was still going but their blog Canadaisamusicmec.ca was still going at the time because it was nominated.
@justin – It did seem very similar when I came across it.
Hello, I’ve been listening to the BCIT campus feed lately. It’s not geofenced and play enough R3 type music to keep it interesting.
http://commons.bcit.ca/evolution1079/
I will be checking out that stream justin.
Well… http://www.allcanadianradio.com/ … I’m on my 2nd song there… country so far… I’m not a huge country fan.
All Canadian Radio isn’t working via TuneIn
Try this Garf.. http://s1.nexuscast.com/start/acradio/
HELLO RUNWABOU!
We were Top 60 and now semi-retired.
Thanks for remembering.
It works with iTunes. Country hour it seems. I will check back later. Playing different genres is a good thing though.
Do they have hosts or is it just a stream like R3?
How would you feel if we added the web player for All Canadian Radio into the bar on the right hand side? At least that way we would have a music stream where we would all hear the same track at roughly the same time.
That is if we can get comments to post without refreshing the entire page and breaking the stream
what about having the stream open a new window? Lots of radio station streams do that, probably to avoid the problem of refreshing the page
@krib, in that case we might as well just have a link to their own player and have it open in a new tab. It will give me something to do over the weekend.
according to their own schedule the Country music block isn’t meant to start for another four hours
Here is the stream for BCIT.
http://cfml.streamon.fm/listen.m3u
sooo….did Reg get that new job? Given that she’s now interviewing famous people, it seems that things have changed for her routine
now it’s a Nickelback soundalike
has anyone listened to this stream for any length of time? so far (for the two songs I’ve listened to) it’s pretty uninspiring
Not yet but from their site I conclude they do commercial Canadian music as well. Not just the indie stuff.
well, it’s Stompa now, which is better than the last two…
Or change the terms to “mainstream” and “alt” if you like.
I was enjoying Cream Puff War by F*cked Up on R3 instead of checking them out right now.
My take… let’s all get if this stream is good or not and go from there.
And then a pop song came on so I will now.
I am going to guess it won’t be my thing but I will give it a try.
Canadian Beats started with the main author’s love of Hedley. That says a lot.
hehe…Hedley. My oldest kids liked Hedley – when they were 12*
*when my kids were 12, not Hedley
it’s now Chad Brownlee, a pop-country type of artist, by the sound of it.
Hi runwabou,
While I like the idea of using a stream that has hosts the problem with using a single college is they are a location focused service but we are an international group and I, for one, would like to use a stream with a Canada wide focus.
Having said that, if there was a stream that offered shows from stations around Canada that would be great.
@krib – Well they are all young and started the site at least 3 years ago. So…
I have to admit, though, I’ve known 1 of the last 6 artists they played.
Can’t say I’ve been a huge fan of most of it, but it’s certainly new to me
although the R3 stream might be new to me these days since I haven’t listened for months
wonder where Grant will end up when his pat leave is done…
oh…Wintersleep now
And Weighty Ghost comes on.
R3 is playing a lot of good music these days.
you’re listening to that All Canadian Radio thing, darbar?
After the news and sport BCIT is playing (little) Sammy Roberts (band), If you want it
I am krib. I am giving it a chance but not doing it for me so far. Other than Wintersleep that is.
Not sure how long I am going to last on that station thought. :-/
My vote is no for this station.
I follow Canadian Beats on Twitter, and they usually tweet our All Canadian Radio, but rarely tag artists I would want to listen to… a lot of country artists, it seemed.
Got this going… I quite like it… http://cfml.streamon.fm/
They are playing Rural Alberta Advantage next.
And for me it’s ‘local’ as it’s in BC.
kudos to them for variety, though. They’ve had 90s alt-rock soundalikes, pop-country, and now whatever this current song is…
it all sounds too radio-y for my liking, though
@Garf… your point about linking to that station is a good one. I think we should have a list of streams and other blogs, etc. Compile all Canada lists! Eh?
what if we had a monthly spotlight? for a month, the stream links to a station/stream. Then it changes.
shouldn’t be too much work to maintain, right?
@krib, we have discussed something like that before where we would talk to a college radio station and feature it for a while but I don’t think the idea of posting the stream was mentioned.
BLACK MOUNTAIN @DARB! … ok, a bit excited here…. on the evolution stream, hee.
I thought I recognized this band (BCIT)
@darbar I found the video is a bit long but fun. I am glad you liked it too.
All four original members of Abba are to reunite for a new digital entertainment project.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-37776505
I like the idea of having a link to a college radio station for a term. it would be nice to have that option to listen to the same thing together and yack about it. I do enjoy it when we share play lists and that is part of a topic for the day too. We have a Co-op radio station here but no college or uni one.
Well you guys motivated me to listen to R3 again, it’s been MONTHS. Took me long enough to find it. Anyways, I’ll see what’s shaking there.
whoa. Who’s that stranger?
@Morgana, I think I have listened to that station once or twice. If the idea worked it could be expanded to other community stations.
The plan was to ask the station to recommend local up and coming artists that we could feature in a playlist.
I know! I took a new position so I can’t listen or do stuff on my phone most work days anymore! I often look to see what’s going on here, but I am also home later so you guys are often done already.
Anyways, I’m 4 songs in on R3 and they’ve all been good. Maybe I should try to listen a little more often. I’m finding it really hard to keep up with what’s new without it.
The band currently playing is called Senior Citizen, clearly they were not advised about choosing a band name that is searchable.
@justin – I missed the Black Mountain. hehe
@morgana – I didn’t watch that one yet but saved it for later. I have watched a bunch in his series but am way behind. I saw that van up close but didn’t get to peak inside.
@radiohead – They do introduce new tunes on a regular basis. Lots of Weaves and Like a Motorcycle these days, which I like. They keep rotating in other tunes. They are also playing some of our old favourties more often now.
And when those songs you detest come on you can skip. As long as you don’t hate more than 6 in an hour that is.
Oh, you can skip ahead! That’s interesting.
I feel like a traitor, listening and seemingly supporting the dismantled version of R3. It’s like they wanted to erase it’s entire past existence. The podcasts aren’t even available on my podcatcher anymore.
Makes me wonder what’s happening politically at CBC because that place runs on egos.
@Pat – The podcasts are now gone?
Not that I could access them anyway. I cherish the old ones that I still have on my computer.
I can’t get them anymore as of last week. I haven’t researched it any further. I have some saved too, on my old PC. I have to find a way to move them over to my MAC.
So, listening I learned the Tiga has a new album out. I guess I should try to listen for a little bit each day. That burns.
Yeah… we mainly have @Garf’s archive, and then what we all have on our computers for podcasts. I notice CBC did not mention at all what was happening with podcasts, but yes they are gone.
Boy, you’re right about them attempting to erase their past existence. I just wish they’re retire the Radio3 name. I wonder who is really responsible for doing this to Radio3? And why they’re doing it? I can’t imagine that there are more “new R3” listeners now that at the end of live hosting. Then again, cutting off non-Canadians it has to be less, and actually might be a really low number.
I have no idea, I don’t know anybody on the inside anymore. They’re all gone. Lots to Slack, haha.
The only person I know still on the inside was Mark Macarthur, who sent me a rather terse and scolding email when we were in the last week of having the blog, when I said, in jest, that Mark is “sharpening his knives in preparation for stabbing us all in the backs”. A post made for an ironic laugh, since he was the one who came onto the blog to let us know that they were going to rip the rest of the guts out of Radio3 as we knew it, and we should prepare ourselves. (He didn’t quite use those terms.) Well, he send me a terse note, and I responded to him that I was just following the time honoured method of shooting the messenger. And not to worry, and wouldn’t be a bother any longer since I was soon to have no access to Radio3 anyway.
That said, I wonder how much he has to do with this all??
yeah, new Tiga is kind of weird and not very melodic, IMO.he doesn’t really bother with things like lyrics, this time. You’ll probably like it, TRH 😛
Another question is when will Grant return and just what will he be doing? Certainly not with something that starts, “Well, hello” (Extend that out 15 seconds for the full effect.) It will have to be frustrating for him.
And it also begs the question just when will he return. He left right at the end of 2015 (didn’t he?) Well, his Smugglers have a show on January 7 in Berkeley, California – will he return to whatever CBC has him do before or after that?
yeah, I wonder where he’ll end up, too
I’ve always loved Tiga! He had a radio show on BBC 6 at one time, though I haven’t looked for it for a while.
Ya, Mark McA he was defending his turf to me as well. He said they were promoting Canadian musicians to an even greater degree at CBC Music now than they had in the past, though it may not look like that to a Radio 3 listener. Seems hard to believe when you have to leave CBC to be able to find more out about about artists. Whatever. The industry is evolving, things change.
Last time GL and I talked about it, he did not know what he was going back to in January 2017. That was in September, I think.
@Mcfflyer, From what I understand the rug was pulled out from under Mark as much, if not more, than us. I think by the time we heard about it the plans had been rolling for over a year and possibly two.
The way it was explained to me was the much higher ups wanted to know why the English and French music services were on different systems and the Francophone side agreed to merge if they had overall control, something the Anglophone side (Radio 3 / CBC Music) knew very little about until the deal was done.
Even things like artists pages were created without permission (again from what I have been told)
All of this stands to be corrected by someone that knows more about it than me.
I am guessing a lot of the reason the R3 group on FB got shut down is that many of us, myself included, were remiss about the loss of R3 and its lost potential. I am guessing the Ceeb did not want new R3’ers seeing those comments and the people inside didn’t want to see them either.
I think where some other problems came from with having artist pages is that initially bands agreed to not get royalties in exchange for being played. That created a problem because commercial stations had to pay to play and CBC was accused of being given preference. SOCAN now gets thrown into the mix, too. I have no idea how all that works.
Anyways, it’s a complicated industry that is constantly in flux and you kind of have to assume they are doing the best they can with what they got. But I don’t understand making history invisible. Even the site that hosted the zines is gone. Those were revolutionary and brilliant works of art that didn’t cost anything to maintain. I have no idea.
I hadn’t even noticed the facebook group had gone silent because I gave up on it a few months ago and left
@TheRadioHead… agreed on maintaining the old stuff, would have been cool to save it. What I can tell you as a web developer myself is that older stuff was on older server or in places they did not want to maintain or deal with anymore.
Ya, I guess that’s probably the case Justin. It’s good to give them the benefit of the doubt. Like I said, they are probably doing the best they can with what they have.
@Justin – There are new R3ers? What in the world would draw them to it? How would they find it? Would Duke listen to it?
a lot of the podcasts were lost when we left the basement to join CBC Music as well
That was a dark, dark day, Garry, when we had to leave the basement. What was the old site address? http://www.cbcradio3.com?
Yeah, live studio concerts were lost at that time. And access to a bunch of really early features.
The R3 FB site still exists, but… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1547737148865353
I’ve really enjoyed listening, thanks for motivating me to do it again you guys! I’ll try to listen for a bit each day and get a better grasp on what’s going on out there. I have felt out of the loop.
Checking out here, too. Thanks for the chats.
@TRH, Thanks for dropping by. Feel free to leave a comment in future, no matter how late it is. One of the first things I do online each morning is to check what was said after I went to bed.
Ha! Benoit, I just searched out the R3 FB site, and they’ve booted all of the members out! But our old posts are there!
I’m going to bid you all a good night
If anybody has any requests for what they would like to see here tomorrow feel free to mention it (no promises)
wahoo…
Well now. I spiced this place up a little! :). Happy to see the reactions from you all!
Oh Lee, it’s not always about you. If you look back you’ll see I started the conversation about R3 and their disappearing history.
I’m listening to that new Tiga album, and it sounds very much like his 2006 release Sexor, the first full length album.
Aaand good morning!
Listening to CFCR on this rainy Thursday.
Good morning! I’m listening to Sonic 102.9 in Edmonton, music isn’t great, but I’m enjoying the conversation with the listeners!
Good Morning,
I’m listening to radio6 from BBC. Most Canadian stations are blocked at work
Sorry about the late start
