Lineup announced for Coachella festival
Seeking to challenge the New Year’s blues Coachella released the lineup for its sunny summer festival yesterday. Or if California isn’t exotic enough for you, you could always head out to the Philippines for the Wanderland Music and Arts Festival held in on March 4, 2017.
Calgary’s Canada Boy Vinyl Pressing Plant Ceases Operations
After less than 2 years on the scene it looks like Canada Boy Vinyl has called it quits on the vinyl pressing game. They are planning to “give everyone an official report by January 9th”.
And Finally
Some of you may be aware that our one time fearless leader, Grant Lawrence, will be “singing” live on stage with his band The Smugglers as part of The Outlooking in Berkeley, California this coming Saturday. We are hoping to send our senior California correspondent to cover the event. But until then here is video of the first night from January 1st.
Hello
Good morning!
Awk! “Senior” California correspondent? Nooooooo!
Senior as in highest ranking
HA!
Good morning! I’m really looking forward to hearing about the Smugglers on Saturday!
I’m still hoping someone will stream Saturdays show live on youtube or facebook
And Grant confirmed to me last night that he is coming up to stay with Peggy and me on Sunday and Monday nights. I’ll certainly be asking him lots and lots of questions, and I’ll report back. If there’s anything you’d like me to ask him, let me know. And no, Jill and the family won’t be coming down.
And Garry, “senior” is, sadly, an appropriate title. I had to start taking one of my pensions as it couldn’t be deferred any longer and gain value.
@Lee, I did think about calling you our cub reporter
Ha, ha, Garry. For years, I rebelled against being considered “old”, maybe because I felt so young when I was involved in our Radio3 community. After all, going up to Vancouver and staying with friends the age of my own children – and feeling like I fit in, made my age seemed to blur. For those few days when I was across the border I felt like I was 30 years younger. Alas, you really can’t argue with Father Time. I have aches and pains I never had before, and things occasionally go wrong, and I can’t deny that I’ve been here for 65 years. And I’m having to collect a pension check. I have 11 months to go before I retire from the State of California, and that’s something I am really looking forward to!
I loooove the quotation marks in the Grant Lawrence bit. BABOOM!
@Benoit, I couldn’t resist it
@Lee, I really did mean senior as you are are highest ranking* correspondent in California, in the same way as the reporters on the Daily Show are often called the senior (the topic they were about to discuss) correspondent. One of the things I love about spending time in Toronto (or any part of Canada for that matter) is I feel more at home there than I do here. I was watching a show about the history of British sit-coms this morning and heard someone say that one of the first question British people ask themselves upon seeing someone new is “what class are they?” That is a question I can’t ever remember thinking, so I may actually have been born in the wrong country.
*and, to be fair, only
Hi All, hope you’re feeling better @Garf. Um the date in the title is reading as “December 4, 2017”, is this right?
@Wynnzie, you spotted my deliberate mistake, yeah that’s it, it was a a deliberate mistake to see if anyone was actually reading the titles. Take a cookie out of petty cash as your reward.
New Said the Whale track! I can’t stream it while at work, but look forward to checking it out this evening.

Darn doesn’t look like there are any chocolate chip cookies left, we need to do something about that!
I blame that Raccoon (wipes crumbs from mouth)
Michael, there will be freshly baked chocolate chip cookies when Grant gets here in Sunday.
Lee that doesn’t help me, but thanks anyways
Hello all!
I would like to see Radiohead. Coachella would be an experience but I am not sure that is where I would like to see them. I will have to find a live stream of that show though.
That is too bad about the vinyl pressing plant. I am sure it is extremely frustrating for those that were waiting for their vinyl to be pressed. I hope it all gets worked out.
I just bought my tickets for Winterruption yesterday. This morning I found out Holy Fuck are in Saskatoon one of those days. I may have to sell my Danny Michel tickets and head to Saskatoon.
That’s being rather selfish, Michael. Grant will certainly appreciate them. And should you ever get out to Sacramento, I’ll make sure we have some for you. 🙂
Darbar, I just googled the Winterruption lineup, it sounds like you’re in for a great 3 days of music!
@janet – It will be soo good! Elliott Brood/Iskwe/Begonia night is the one I am most looking forward to. Said The Whale/Northcote/The Garrys should also be pretty spectacular and I love Danny Michel and heard a lot about William Prince during Breakout West and was looking forward to hearing him. But Holy Fuck! I have been waiting for so long to get a chance to see them again.
I’m suffering from major ROMO on seeing Begonia! I included them as an honourable mention on my list of albums in 2016, because I just can’t stop listening to Jupiter!
I expect you will be hearing more from Begonia. What a voice huh?
So good! I didn’t think I liked Chic Gamine, but Alexa Dirks has been changing my mind! Looking forward to hearing more!
@Janet Ack, I hate drum machines and I love Spencer! I knew this was coming but I am still sad. The STW song is still pretty good though. What did you think?
My mind is contorting at the idea of a music festival in the Philippines; of course, I am sure there are ton’s of them but at the same time it doesn’t fit in with my memories. I worked and lived in the Philippines for three months and I have to say that the music was one of my least favourite parts about being there. Horrible pop music and kereoke machines everywhere! This predates being able to travel with your music library in the palm of your hand so I was not able to bring my own. I did make a recording on cassette of the radio station just to have as a keepsake reminder of how bad it was … i wonder where that is now?
@Morgana, I liked the new STW song, though I agree with you on drum machines!
@darbar I love livestreaming Coachella! Last year I had so many hassles that I gave up:(
What do you think about turning turning live streaming of Coachella into a blog topic of some sort?
@morgana – That is certainly something to look into. I have enjoyed live streaming Coachella in the past as well.
@Morgana, that would be simple enough to do
I was wondering if we should have a simple post on Sundays for people to chat on while listening to Strombo’s show.
@darbar and @everyoneelse i wonder what would work best; each picking an artist to write about the week leading up to and or simply blogging at the time of the live stream or perhaps a post show round up … thoughts?
@garfielduk Strombo is one of the few shows i am really enjoying on the CBC these days but I wouldn’t want to add to your work load. What about a Monday recap of his Sunday show and let those who listened chime in then?
@Morgana, I was thinking we could try to recapture a bit of the old R3 site spirit with all the commenters listening to the same music at the same time
I like having a place to blog during shared experiences. I don’t usually catch Strombo until after the fact though. I am listening to Hip 30 again right now. Such a good show with so many great Hip covers!
I love the idea of a blog during shared experiences! I don’t usually listen to Stombo (though I should, it’s one of the few things I can stream from CBC) but I would make an attempt to start for a shared blog.
Hey! Grant just posted on Instagram and Facebook that there will be Smugglers t-shirts available at the Berkeley gig. I know Russ wants one. How about the rest of you?
We could always create the post to go live for the show and leave it open for Monday
@Lee, yes please Sir (they may not have my size)
What size, Garry? I just asked if they had my size, XXL.
@Garf – That sounds like a great plan!
XXL please, if nothing else it will give me something to aim for
Good night friends!
G’night Janet
Garry, Grant said the largest size is XL.
Night Janet!
Then that will have to do please
@Lee, do you have a PayPal account that I can send the money to for the shirt?
No, I don’t Garry. We’ll worry about that later.
Hahaha… “Senior California correspondent”.
Bite me, Trojan boy. 🙂
@Garry – They are making several XXLs because I asked. I’ll get you one.
