Guess Who’s Protest Song Enters Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame
The Guess Who’s 1970 protest song “Hand Me Down World” has been inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (CSHF), by the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN), the performing rights organization which purchased it in 2011. Right now it’s a virtual induction, a song added to a list online, as determined by the CSHF induction committees and approval by the board of directors.
Are the Junos ‘too male’?
MacLeans talks to Allan Reid, the head of CARAS, on Canada’s musical and political moment, and the criticisms that the Juno Awards are too male.
And Finally
Have you left you Valentine’s day plans to the last second, do you find little more than a couple of quarters and a fuzzy lifesaver when you search through your pockets?
If you answer yes to both of these questions you might want to check out MoneySenses post on Affordable Valentine’s Day date ideas across Canada.
Good day!
Hello
Good morning!
So. I heart chocolates day.
The enthusiasm is simply coursing through my veins.
Good morning.
I have gotten a cold for Valentines. Good thing we didn’t make any plans.
Dar, it’s gonna be a snuffly-wrap evening?
Good morning! Happy Tuesday!
That sounds about right Benoit.
For those that aren’t on my FB I shared some news late yesterday. I was accepted as a Polaris Music Prize Juror! I applied 2 or 3 months back and found out 2 weeks ago I was in. I am finally able to go public with the news. I am very excited!
Contrats Candy
Yeah, dar, rippah!
Congratulations! That is super exciting!
Premiere: The Wooden Sky – ‘You’re Not Alone’
It is pretty great. I was surprised but very happy I was among the new jurors. Talia Schlanger was a new juror this year as well.
The process is the jurors make suggestions/recommendations and those are the ones that get voted on to make the long list. Hopefully deserving albums don’t get missed. I have made one recommendation for Royal Canoe so far and there are many other personal favs on the list already but I will make a couple more probably.
There are a lot of albums that came out or will be coming out in the eligible time period. More musical discoveries will be made!
Darbar will they send you music, or do you put forward albums you know about?
Hmm, Talia is in the US now, I wonder how that works? I guess she is still Canadian though. Congrats though!
The jurors suggest albums with a contact name. Polaris gets permission from them to grant us access to listen. So there may be some we will get to hear before they are officially released. Let me know if there is an album you are hoping will be in the running. I will consider suggesting it if it isn’t on the list already. We are supposed to only recommend ones that we would legitimately vote for. So no promises.
My question is (not at all based on memories of Grant): can you be bribed with chocolate chip cookies (home-made, naturellement) ???
You can try…but no.
I had a similar thought process Wynnsie about Talia.
I was wondering if we should suggest albums for you to listen to for possible recommendation on the initial list
Re: Talia
Part of me wants to apply next year just to see what they say but I am worried about the work involved if they say yes
That is what I was getting at. If there are albums you strongly feel should be considered, Iet me know. Many have probably already been suggested but not all.
Good morning everyone!
@Darb… that’s to badass RE being selected for being a Polaris Music Prize juror!
Hmmmm…
New Kashka and ElliottBROOD coming soon…
I will put those on my list Russ.
It is pretty awesome Justin. 🙂
Hey there is a twitter feed going on at the side.
IT’S TAKING OVER!!!
Our twitter account wasn’t used very often and I didn’t like how it looked inwards so I changed it to being an autoupdating feed of musicians tweets. It still needs work in the form of cropping for length and the list of artists could probably do with an edit.
Good plan Garf!
(I have been meaning to get access to the social media accounts as I noticed the old tweets at the side)
We also can have more than one Twitter widget, as long as the design of the site works overall.
Just wondering if I missed this or if it’s news, I just noticed that Grant’s not on the Polaris Jury list, was he there last year?
OK thanks Darbs, just saw your FB reply, looks like it is news.
And Lana is still at Radio 3/CBC Music, they don’t seem too diligent on the profile updates, Chris Dart too it says CBC Music, unless he’s freelancing he no longer works there.
They need to update them themselves. I recall reminding Lana to update her Twitter profile at one point as well.
I forget how I discovered how to change mine so understandable that they don’t get updated. Mine was blank under my name at first and I added the OurBasement.ca to it.
OK then that clears it up a bit. There are a few others that are blank too. Can you search for fellow jurors’ profiles, in the admin? Maybe Grant is still there, he just has disabled it for now.
Oh now I found the Edit Profile button again.
I wonder if it is worth mentioning to Indie88 so they can nudge Lana to update her profile
did Jesse Brown’s hard-hitting investigative “journalism” get Grant fired?
I can mention it to Lana herself. :p
Grant is not in the google group either. He may just backed out himself. Book and family and not being involved with playing music right now.
Even Lana’s FB profile still says CBC. hehe
Grant is still in the twitter group though.
She may be in denial. It has only been 1 year, 10 months, 18 days since R3 dropped live hosting (not that I am counting)
They may just have not kicked him out of that twitter group.
(How time flies!)
Maybe they just don’t want to get rid of Grant altogether 🙂
Hehe maybe.I have never been part of a twitter group, so I am not sure how it works yet. I can see what the other jurors tweet about easier I guess.
And now this sickie needs a nap. I will be back later.
Feel better!
Grant responded to our query on FB
what did he say (I can’t find it)
never mind, I found it
What did Grant have to say (for those of us not on Facebook)?
He basically said, he’s done everything Polaris, and it was time to move on. And that Darlene got his spot.
That’s cool. Thanks for the paraphrase!
I can phrase-the-para with the best of them.
I usually need a drink or two before paraing phrases
Garf those are Slurr phrases, not para!
you say potato I say hick
There were a whole lot of new jurors this year and I don’t think jurors have anything to do with new ones. So I don’t think I really took Grant’s spot. Hehe
Guns N’ Roses yell ‘Hello Sydney’ – to Melbourne crowd
No-one likes being mistaken for someone else – especially if that someone else has been their sworn rival for more than a century.
So when Guns N’ Roses yelled “Hello, Sydney” as they walked on stage in Melbourne, they were unsurprisingly met with a chorus of boos.

If they have a maximum number of jurors it may be one out one in so you might have taken Grant’s spot but I don’t think he would have had any input on the choice
I’ve run out of teabags 🙁
Uh oh! Time to run to the store?
I’ll go in the morning
I’m off! Talk to you all tomorrow!
g’night folks
