The playlist for this Playlist Friday was going to be for Cinco de Mayo originally but I quickly realized I was going to have a hard time finding Cdn Indie songs for that. So I combined it with good old beer o’clock because it’s a celebration after all.
Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. (Source: History.com)
The tradition has made its way up to Canada as well now. Mostly it is an excuse for people to eat Mexican food and drink Mexican drinks. Watch the video at the link above and read the history lesson to help you know what you are celebrating.
The end of the playlist has one Mariachi song and the others are Latin or Spanish influenced. It was the best I came up with so the majority of the playlist is updated versions of mine and NVP’s beer o’clock playlists from back in the day. Cheers NVP and Happy Cinco de Mayo all!
Feliz Cinco de Mayo
Wait, today is a celebration of the French being defeated by someone, why isn’t it more popular in England?
Good morning!
Nicely done.
Good day!
garf, 05:37: Um, for reasons exemplified in Fawlty Towers?
I think that, historically, the French have always been the English’s “favourite enemy”, and even at times “frienemy”.
Spain doesn’t rate that highly, except for port and sherry of course. And vacations. So, as for a Spanish COLONY’s problems with the French?
… (What thinkest thou?)
Hello hello! Digging the playlist, as usual!
Having never vacationed in Spain the only time it really ventures into my life is during the Vuelta a España
Hello! I didn’t really know what Cinco de Mayo was about. Who knew making playlists could be so educational?
Thanks for listening. 🙂

I just saw that announcement Janet. Looks pretty darn good. I don’t think I will make that one but I am hoping to get to the one in Winnipeg.
I’d like to get to one of them, but I don’t know that it’s in the budget this summer.
Andy Shauf had gear stolen now. Shitty thiefs!

Those puppies are a dangerous time waster
That could end being the highlight of CTV’s new Fall lineup this year
Hey All! I want to get to this playlist, but it’s blocked at work, I do love my Mariachi though, so can’t wait to hear some of it.
Hey Wynnsie! There is only one Mariachi song on there by Mariachi Ghost. Do you know of other Canadian Mariachi bands I can add to the playlist?
what about Mariachi Silvestri

or Mariachi Mexico

Good for YouTube! Not sure I can find them on Spotify but I can try.
I am checking spotify before I post them
last one Cazcabel
I found Mariachi Mexico but not sure about the other two.
Hmm, there was one that opened for Young Rival a year or two back, but I can’t remember the name, they were great. I don’t think there are many that make their own music tho.
Those are different spellings. Are they the same bands?
Cascabel is a nope.
The other one doesn’t look what I am looking for either. Thanks though.
I apologize, I didn’t think to compare spellings
@Wynnsie – No doubt. They generally play very traditional music.
@Garf – No worries. I appreciate the help.
If you need to come down from the beer o’clock party, Mac DeMarco’s new album does the trick. It is pretty chill and quite lovely.
Now with added spotify playlist for yesterdays releases
