The playlist this week takes us up north to experience the Northern Lights of music from NWT, Yukon and Nunavut. I put them all together as it is an area whose music I was really unfamiliar with and didn’t think I would find enough for three separate playlists. I do learn a lot putting these playlist together and have enjoyed my musical journey around Canada.
Fusing of old-world sounds and new-world flair seems to be part of what is happening in the north. Artists like Tanya Tagaq, The Jerry Cans and Quantum Tangle are proof of that. There are traditional and hip hop and rock and singer songwriters and more all adding to the mix. There are many songs with messages and many singing of their pride of where they come from. I enjoyed my visit and learning a bit more of the music coming from the north. I hope you enjoy it too.
Ryan McNally was an artist I saw at BreakOutWest in Regina last year and really enjoyed his set. Brigitte Desjardins on the washboard was fun to watch as well. I couldn’t find him on Spotify so here is a video of them performing.
Another group’s name kept coming up as I was looking up artists. I couldn’t find them on Spotify either though. Quantum Tangle are a Canadian musical group, who won the Juno Award for Indigenous Music Album of the Year for their album Tiny Hands at the Juno Awards of 2017. I like what I have heard and you should check them out.
Scary Bear Soundtrack is someone we heard about from CBC Searchlight. They were from Nunavut then but seem to be located in Ottawa. They have a new track out and you can listen to it on Bandcamp. More music with a message.
Good morning!
Come on, long weekend…
You guys are just compensating for missing out on Victoria Day weekend…
Cracking busy here.
It sure is. :-/
Good morning.
Hey ho! How are things? Here, the later part of Spring is reluctantly coming in, with much wetness added from the South. Great year for black flies and mosquitoes.
Keeping busy here. Cloudy, cool and possible rain here today and tomorrow. We are trying to put on a street festival so more sunshine would be appreciated but the show must go on!
I hate mosquitoes because they love me.
I have been looking forward to this playlist all week!
I will be sharing it with my sister who lives in Whitehorse as well.
I only recognize half a dozen of the band names so exploring new sounds today. Thanks Durbar:)
Well, against those pesky mosquitoes, get off beer and bananas, and into citrus fruit. (Assuming you can do such fluctuations, bekuz health).
Of course the first part of that admonition is not always *possible*.
hello, what did I miss?
@morgana – I had some trouble on this playlist. If I had a bit more time this week I would have done a better search. It wasn’t as easy to find the artists than with other provinces. Many aren’t on Spotify either. I hope you and your sister enjoy. If you guys have any suggestions they can be added.
My theory about mosquitoes and me is that I have just far too sweet to pass up. It could be my sugar addiction not my disposition but if there is one near me they will find me.
Hi Garf. Not much.
I chatted with myself yesterday.
Last playlist for the provinces and territories of Canada today. What now? Start again?
I saw you talking to yourself yesterday (after you had signed off), it reminded me of listening to Lisa’s show
Haha! Yup
You could merge them together to create a giant Canadian playlist for Canada Day
you could also start reaching out to artists to see if they would like to create playlists as well
150 songs for 150 years maybe
Good ideas!
finding songs on Spotify from 1867 could be a challenge 🙂
Just look for Rex Murphy’s “Hits from My teenage years” playlist
actually, though, maybe not…Alan Mills did a bunch of work collecting old Canadian songs
checkout Saskatchewan on this collection

cool krib! after todays playlist i will move onto that one.
I just had to share this
oh and I have gone back through yesterday’s post and added the spotify playlists
it’s like watching an episode of Still Game
looks like they’re wearing diapers (the horses, that is)
after helping my OAOAGF move horses last weekend, the first thing I thought of was “what if they take a big dump?”
because horses do that. Granted, her horses are a little bigger than these ones, but still.
The were wear something to catch that, look for the straps around the flanks
sorry, I didn’t see your first post noting that
g’night folks
Night Garf. Have a great weekend!
happy weekend all!
I saw Ryan McNally open for The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer last month. He knows his stuff. Not all of his stuff is my jam tho.
Hey, I recognize that boardwalk that Quantum Tangle is performing on! Whitehorse I do believe. Love the band name too BTW.
@morgana – I liked their band name as well. They seem like cool people. They did a PA on abuse that was pretty good.
I must admit my favourite part of Ryan McNally’s set was the washboard player. She was so much fun to watch and I wanted to try it out.
I am off to run a night of entertainment at the festival! Have a great weekend!
