Playlist Friday is about my top 20 choices for the Polaris Music Prize Long List. I have until June 6 to make my choices so I thought I would share with you where I am at since I shared my Top 40 list in March and maybe get some feedback from you too.
Here are some numbers for you. There are about 209 jurors and they have recommended to the group around 211 albums. Who knew so many albums are released in a year?! And that is only the ones that have been recommended. Each juror can vote for 5 albums on their ballot and the results from that will become the Long List of 40 albums. June 6 is when we must have our votes in. Taking place on June 13 at the National Arts Centre (NAC) in Ottawa at 7pm, this special edition of the Polaris Podcast will feature a roundtable selection of Polaris jurors as well as special guests. They’ll be tasked with discussing the freshly unveiled 40 album 2017 Polaris Music Prize Long List, which is being revealed earlier that day at the National Arts Centre. (Press Release)
We will then do more listening of those 40 albums to again cast our ballots with our 5 album choices to make the Short List of 10 albums that will be released on July 13, 2017. At the Gala on Sept 18, 2017 there will be a Grand Jury of 11 jurors making the decision of the winner of Polaris Music Prize for 2017.
The playlist starts with my current top 5 at the beginning and the rest in no particular order. The list keeps getting rearranged and songs added and deleted and I am not sure yet what my final decision will be. What five albums that were released between June 1, 2016 and May 31, 2017 would you like to see on the Long List? Take the survey and/or comment below to let me know. Tell me why you think those albums should be on there. Convince me but make it quick, I only have a few days left to decide!
Good morning everyone! And, where is everyone?
Hi Justin. The post didn’t go up this morning for some reason so they were on the last page. We are here now.
Hi!
Hello, I wasn’t sure if you had finished editing the post so I didn’t publish it
I read that on the last post Garf. I assume I had some scheduling time error.
I blame Grant
Haha! Works for me.
Don’t forget to tell me your Polaris 5 picks. At least tell me your favourite album of the past year. 🙂

I couldn’t even tell you what came out in the last year
Hello hello! I am digging this playlist, Darbar! I absolutely don’t envy your decision though!
That is the first part of it Garf. Remembering albums that might be in the eligible range and checking out release dates. Whatever you come up with I can see if it is eligible, at least tell you if it has been recommended.
I want more than 5 votes Janet!
If you can’t think of any others, you could let me know which ones of my top 20 you would vote for. 😉
Also, there are a lot of albums I enjoy that just don’t make my Polaris list. Rose Cousins, Amelia Curran, Jenn Grant and so many more.
Darbar, I’m halfway through on Centre, with Tanya Tagaq and Shad, Kick A so far!
In taking your survey, Darbar, I almost voted for an album on last year’s shortlist 🙂
@Justin – I have a lot of instrumental at the end. I love it but know it’s not everyone’s cuppa tea.
@Janet – Ha! That happens. It’s hard to remember when stuff came out.
Thanks for listening and playing along!
There was also Preoccupations, Dirty Nil, Needles//Pins, New Fries and on and on to choose from.
I’ve only really listened to one album in the last year, and that was Hollerado’s new one, which I thought was good, my bias and all, but I have nothing else to compare it to, so I don’t really have a favourite album of the last year.
Albums are going by the way-side anyway, it’s hard enough to write one good song – let alone 10!
Speaking of the non-album, I wonder how Tokyo Police Club fit in with their last couple releases. I think they released two EPs last year and then combined them at some point, do they even qualify for Polaris?
I am learning about some more hip hop artists as well. Tasha the Amazon I was aware of but Alaclair Ensemble and Tony Lanez were a couple of new ones for me.
The Weeknd and Drake have eligible albums.
@garf you have to put OurBasement into the Tees somehow! Whether it’s just the logo or a full-on official Tee, the words “Our Basement” must be displayed!
*Tory Lanez
Tokyo Police Club weren’t recommended by anyone. They need to be at least 5 tracks or at least 20 minutes long to be eligible. Hollerado didn’t get a recommendation either. 🙁
Hmm sounds like some real elitists there! Time to drain the swamp. But I figured they wouldn’t include those ones.
That’s why people like me made it on the jury! Mix it up a little. 😉
This was my Long List Playlist in March.

@Darbs, haha yes! And really this prize should be helping those that need it, i.e. up and comers who need that little boost of awareness. Arcade Fire aside, almost every other polaris winner was one that either I hadn’t heard of, or I thought was least likely to win
I expect the same this year…
DRAIN THE SWAMP! LET’S MAKE POLARIS GREAT AGAIN!
@Wynnsie – I seriously wish I could have more votes. It makes it hard trying to get your more unknown favs on to the long list and voting for the bigger names as well.
Has Woodhands released anything this year?
Not that I know of. The Wooden Sky have though. :p
Listening to my Long List from March. Brasstronaut, The Luyas, The Hidden Cameras, Lindy Vopnfjord, John K Samson! More albums I really like but didn’t make it to my top 20.
CMac’s list will be very different from mine I am guessing.
Will you get to see everyone else’s list?
Only if they post it to the discussion group. A couple people have done that.
I’m not sure Woodhands are even playing music together anymore, I have seen both members (separately) in the past couple of years, Dan was at Royal Mountain recording his own stuff, and Paul was on his way to rehearse with RRA. I’d say (but don’t know for sure) that that is his musical focus. Dan seemed to be doing stuff on his own, more as a hobby.
When I first started at Radio 3 they were doing a radio show together (it happened more than a few times, but was intermittent). Anyways I met them at that time. But never say never! Time to make Radio 3 great again! (or NOT)
A new song from Royal Canoe/Begonia! Love it!!

MW, wiki more or less confirms it. Nothing out since 2010 under that name.
Love the new Royal Canoe/Begonia, so fun!
