Walrus released their debut LP on June 9, 2017 and it is getting a lot of positive reviews. Since hearing their tracks from their Goodbye Something EP, I have been looking forward to hearing more from this Halifax, Nova Scotia quartet. I was not disappointed. It is a fantastic album.
They definitely have a Beatlesque sound but comparisons to many other bands keep popping up in the reviews. Each track reminding people of a different band. Kraftwerk, The Turtles, The Kinks, Jefferson Airplane were all mentioned along with sounding like George Harrison in one track and John Lennon in another. They all seemed to be in agreement that Walrus were making their own unique music though.
“Walrus have surpassed their indie up-and-coming status to become one of the most talented and unique sounding bands in the Canadian music scene today.” (Adrian Lysenko – Off the Wall Reviews)
“The album shows a band that has distinctly cultivated its own sound, and look to progress further as time goes.” (Soundblab)
“Walrus are creating some of the most potent rock music in Canada today, and Family Hangover demonstrates that fact amply.” (Corey Henderson – Exclaim)
“Blending a lot of influence into something truly original these Canadians are doing for psych rock what The Sheepdogs did for stomping classic rock. ” (Northern Transmissions)
“Without a doubt, Family Hangover is probably the only type of hangover you’ll want to experience over and over again.” (James Alvarez – Get Some Magazine)
Sounds pretty good right? All I know is I enjoyed listening to the album and expect I will be listening to it a lot more. Still not convinced? Here is what Dan Mangan had to say on his Facebook page:
“Ok so this album seriously rips. It’s out today on this weird little side project Madic Records that I started with my buds at Arts & Crafts for EXACTLY the reason to put out gems like this. The response this album has been getting is just amazing. Incredible reviews, north and south of the border. I’m so proud of the Walrus boys. They haven’t stopped touring in 2 years, laying all the groundwork and gathering new supporters with every show. Thanks Wintersleep for being so amazing and bringing them all over the place. Thanks to the whole team pushing this LP and to all the folks picking it up and spreading the word. They have a big show coming up July 22nd at The Drake Hotel in Toronto. Get yo tix. These boys are about to rip it up.”
Go “rip it up” Walrus and enjoy the ride!
Now everybody go take a listen and decide for yourself. I don’t think you will be disappointed either.
What do you think? Did you enjoy it? I think Glam is my favourite track right now, what is yours?
Hello
Good morning!
Hi!
Well, ‘q’ won’t be accused of being too indieband, this morning: Nickelback’s on the show.
Enjoyable lapsus on the part of Tom Power: “More than fifty albums so — fifty million albums sold,…”
Up to now, a very enjoyable, down-to-earth, interview. They have clips of Chad K. in 1997.
“Belonging to a tribe”. An easy concept, right? Often unthought of as such. For example people who aren’t all that much into a sport but wear the sweater and do the cheers, to belong.
I think Nickelback is the recipient of the very reverse: the “I don’t belong to that tribe” decision.
Lastly: C.K. sounds nothing so much as Canadian.
Greetings and salutations! Dan Mangan has been pretty high on Walrus and keeps tweeting about them. I’m looking forward to checking out their album!
Morning all!
Sounds like an interesting interview Benoit. I will have to check it out. It seems like it is making Chad likable. I was just having a conversation on the tribe thing on the weekend. It was the part of professional sports teams I got.
@janet – Can’t be a bad thing to have Dan Mangan in your corner. I hope you enjoy the album.
If anyone is going to be the Edmonton area in October, the lineup for the Up and Downtown Festival looks pretty good!
http://updt.ca/
Yup!
Oh wow! I just might have to make sure I am there then. My son will have a workshop in Edmonton in the fall sometime but chances are slim it will land then. US Girls and Holy Fuck will get me back to Edmonton though. Molten Lava is my old drum instructor’s band! He lives in Vancouver now and it would be nice to see his face melting band again.
And that was just Friday! I am going. I have decided. OMG!
I do wish I could go!
It looks pretty damn fantastic! I wish everyone could come!
Ever have one of those days where you schedule everything around a webinar in the afternoon, only to discover that the webinar is next week? I was so productive this morning, and am now not sure what to do with myself!
Haha! I am sure you will find some way to occupy your time.
Oh yeah, there’s always plenty to do. 🙂
I am trying BA Johnston again. He is an entertaining fella but I am not sure I dig his jams enough to vote for him.
Anybody listen to Walrus yet? Thoughts?
I haven’t yet, but will tonight, I’m looking forward to giving them a listen!
I was counting on you listening later Janet! 😀
Anybody else? Hello?
Guess not. :p
