The playlist this week is in honour of Remembrance Day. It is important to honour and remember those that have fought and those that have fallen to give us the freedom and peace we have today. It is important to remember and be thankful. We are doing it OurBasement style with Canadian Indie Music that somehow related to Remembrance Day or war or peace or whatever other connection that formed in my mind. Enjoy the playlist but don’t forget to pause for a moment to pay your respect.
In Flanders Fields by John McCrae (one of a couple versions)
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Hello
Good day!
Good morning!
I feel like I should keep commenting to prove that I am still awake
Hello hello! I wasn’t sure if there was going to be anyone here today, glad to see there is.
I am here, I’m not all here but then again I never am
I’ll take what I can get 🙂
I’m bummed to discover that the Wailin’ Jennys will be here for 2 shows in December and both are sold out. I didn’t realize they had such a following down here.
@Janet, see if you can get a press pass to review one of the shows for us
Here is my go to for Remembrance Day. Tanglefoot sings Vimy.

Garfield – how would I do that? just email the venue? The band?
@Janet, you could try that but it would probably be better to contact their label and/or the show promoters
Thanks for posting that vid Scott! I was going to add it to the playlist but it isn’t on Spotify.
@Janet – What Garf says. If you can’t find their promoter/label, try the band.
Okay, thanks for the tips Garf and Darbar! I’ll search out the promoter and label and see if they can get me a press pass. How cool would that be?
Here is their US record label https://www.redhouserecords.com/
US Booking Agent: Herschel Freeman
and they seem to be working with http://www.frontierpromotions.com
Oh wow, thank you for that! I’ll reach out today, and see if I can get in!
as we say here
shy bairns get nowt
@janet – I have only tried a couple times but it is something I should attempt more. Good luck!
I should work on our email server so you can have an ourbasement.ca address to make these requests look more official
Darbar, have you had much luck when you’ve done it? I’m not sure what to expect.
It was easier than I thought. Yes 2 for 2 so far.
Sweet! That makes me a little less nervous 🙂
Don’t worry, the worst they can do is say no.
I could use one of those ourbasement email addresses for sure.
@garfielduk 08:50
what?
and good morning
@janet I too am a woos when it comes to asking for press passes … i have never tried but it makes me uncomfortable. i fully support your endeavour and then you can share some tips with me 😉
I should ask Justin about the email situation and give Janet a contributors account on here
@Morgana, Shy bairns get nowt
bairns = children
nowt = nothing
or in other words, you don’t find out unless you ask
Good morning morgana!
I am still uncomfortable with it myself but am working on getting over it. I pay to support the artists mostly but there are times like when a show is sold out it would be handy. I volunteered for Melissa’s Ladybird Sanctuary to get into a sold out Whitehorse show once and got to meet Luke and Melissa before the show.
@Garf – And a contributors account for me too right?
Thanks for the support, Morgana!
Whitehorse opened for Barenaked Ladies down here a couple of years ago, and during the set change and BNL set, Melissa and Luke were selling their merch in the lobby of the theatre. After buying a CD I went to get it autographed, but completely drew a blank when it came time to talk to Luke and Melissa. I knew I wanted to say something, but got really shy when it came to my turn. It was a bit embarrassing, and thankfully I was saved by my sweetie, who came to the show with me and started the conversation.
I felt a little uncomfortable fishing to get my name on the list for an upcoming Brood show, but I will use the money I would have spent at the door on the merch table instead
@DBS, you already have an account here, it’s how you can post the playlists. Janet emails her posts to me at the moment.
Oh, I see. I was referring to the email still. Thanks for explaining.
You got some encouragement from Babs though right? That would make it easier.
@darbar I am going to save your playlist for the 11th, to get me in the mood and all.
@scott as soon I finish listening to this new album (warning non cancon)
I will listen/watch Tanglefoot.
@garfielduk 09:52 darbar was after a charge account again wasn’t she 😉
haha!
Jenn Grant is coming in February!!
gtg, the day calls.
The Remembrance Day playlist is loose in it’s interpretation at times, as usual.
I wish I had the money to pay expenses
Oh, so I shouldn’t have sent you my receipts?
@Janet, I needed the laugh 😀
Did I break the blog again?
Just that time of day I think. I am still sort of here.
It’s 8pm and I’m still awake!
either that or I have started dreaming about the blog
You have definitely been around more today! Is it a dream or is it real?
caught in a land slide, no escape from reality
I know one thing, if nobody scores in the next 17 minutes of this game I am going to give up and go to sleep
I have to finish a podcast for Monday
Open your eyes, look up to the skies
Oh cool another podcast. I look forward to it.
I have most of it done but I have yet to do the D block (it was the dumpster round up last time). I am hoping something will come to me tomorrow
Yay! New podcast, I’m looking forward to it!
I might have to make that block about how and why the podcast now has a sponsor
No score between England & Germany at half time so I am going to sleep
Have a great weekend
You too Garf!
I’m out too! Have a great weekend!
You too Janet!
