Voting on the first round of this year’s Searchlight began yesterday. With over 2,700 entries from all over Canada, including 14 from “The North”, covering genres from Classical to Rock and Indigenous to Country.
You have until February 28th (2:59 pm EST) to listen and vote on who you would like to see in the top 100 to make it through to the next round with the winner being announced on Monday, March 19th.
The Searchlight-winner will receive a placement in the 2018 Allan Slaight Juno Master Class, Canada’s premiere artist development program, before taking everything they’ve learned to the 2019 Juno Awards in London, Ont., where they will perform at JunoFest and attend all the Juno festivities! This prize package includes travel, accommodations, registration, and per diems for up to four people.
They will receive a week-long residency and full access to the recording facilities at the National Music Centre’s new building, Studio Bell, in Calgary with access to more than 300 historic musical instruments spanning 450 years of music innovation and technology.
The winning artist or band will also have the chance to perform in front of thousands of music fans at the CBC Music Festival in Toronto, held at Echo Beach on Saturday, May 26, 2018.
And don’t forget to keep following our Friday Playlist posts to see what gems our own Darlene discovers during each round of the contest.
Good morning!
Hello
G’day!
Without wanting to laugh at them, the way the female Korean on-t.v. commentator reacted, after the Korean competitor was disqualified and lost 3rd place in women’s speed skating, was awfully cute.
I just learned that double luge (whaaaaa?) is run by two humans of any gender. Today, all men.
Is there another sport that accepts men and women indifferently?
Two-human luge is the weirdest. Bottom human in particular.
I just learned that about the luge as well
The only other gender-neutral Olympic sports I can think of are equestrian events
Equestrian! Good find.
Out now!
Oh and some of the sailing classes are also gender-neutral
Thanks for the Searchlight post Garf. Now I can link back to it on Friday. I have begun listening to Searchlight artists and am making a playlist. I am not going to get through them all by Friday though, so if anyone has an artist they want to share with us let me know!
I will let you know if I find any favourites
Much appreciated!
It’s not there is anything else happening today that I could do a post about

Hi Janet
KEXP just played Elliott Brood’s *Miss You Now*. Great song. Very Broodish.
I do like the Brood
I was glad there last album Ghost Gardens sounded more like Elliott Brood of my memory. Then I read it was old demos and ideas found on an old hard drive and reworked. Ahhh that makes sense.
Friggin’ bands. Who told them they could evolve, anyway?
Oh missed my edit time. Ha! *their*
I love that bands evolve and change, I just don’t always like what they evolve to.
yeah! only play the music I like damn it!
I missed it, was listening to Chopz spin on Radio-Red.
Hey kids. Having a good Valentines Day I hope.
I am making a run for the coast next week.
Anyone have a Bahamas ticket I buy from them? Or know of anyone who knows anyone …
I enjoyed the new single from Dan Mangan
Back to the style I prefer of his. I liked all the added instrumental intricacies he added in over the years but not how he pushed his voice in Oh Fortune. Back to that evolve but only the way I like it please and thank you;)
Suki and I are going for a walk in the new snow.
Back in a bit to start cooking the sushi feast for Valentines dinner
