Chilly Gonzales – Solo Piano III
As one of the few piano players to really stand out in the world of indie, Chilly Gonzales always makes music for himself. On his latest record, Gonzales not only crafts a work with a stunning emotional depth, but taps into something equally accessible to classical and pop fans alike. Though it will definitely feel a little sparse to some, if you can appreciate the minimalism Gonzales works with that really makes this album pop.(Northern transmissions)
Jesse And The Dandelions – Give Up The Gold
Psychedelic-pop group Jesse and the Dandelions started off in Edmonton, Alberta creating dreamy melodies and poetry-like lyrics; since the release of their 2013 debut album A Mutual Understanding their caliber continues to grow – noting radio success with CBC and campus community stations, and over 100k Spotify streams for their song “True Blue” from their sophomore release of the same name.(Canadian Beats)
John Wort Hannam – Acres of Elbow Room
Alberta’s John Wort Hannam is about to release his brand new album, Acres of Elbow Room on September 7. Recently, he released the first single from the album, “Key of D Minor”, a song he wrote about his battle with depression.(Canadian Beats)
Klaus – Klaus
Klaus, is the new Montreal indie supergroup, which features members François Lafontaine (Karkwa, Galaxie), Joe Grass (Patrick Watson), and drummer Samuel Joly. The band has already shared the lead-track “Fever”. The album will be officially released on September 7th via Simone Records (Hubert Lenoir, Camaromance, Ariane Moffatt). Klaus will also be playing Montreal’s Mile Ex End festival which also includes The Barr Brothers, Broken Social Scene, Charlotte Day Wilson and more on September 2nd in Montreal.(Northern transmissions)
Petra Glynt – My Flag Is A Burning Rag Of Love
My Flag Is a Burning Rag of Love encapsulates a moment of political and cultural collision and the aftermath as its pilot, Alexandra Mackenzie — aka Petra Glynt — seeks to guide listeners through the urban detritus of 2018 propaganda to somewhere full of light, all while evoking the likes of cultural touchstones Gloria Steinem and Salvation Mountain.(Exclaim!)
Rae Spoon – bodiesofwater
That soft glow of the burning world provides the background of Rae Spoon’s ninth album bodiesofwater, a collection of songs well suited for a civilization feeling perpetually on the brink of self-destruction: Spoon collects water and dried food as the end of the world comes bearing down on “It’s Getting Close”; the end itself takes the form of a natural disaster on “Bioluminescent”; and Spoon serves a scathing takedown of the misguided Liberal government and their pipeline policies on the sludgy, synth-filled “You Don’t Do Anything.”(Exclaim!)
hello
Good morning! You might want to pluralise your print title, up there.
done, thank you
Fun: there’s a black bear in downtown Ottawa, near the By-Ward Market — say a kilometre from Parliament Hill.
Unusual.
it could be looking for the minister in charge of the environment
When a bear’s around, IT IS the minister of the Environment. You don’t argue with the Minister.
Maybe we ought to make it a NAFTA negotiator
You can be the one to tell it there has been another reshuffle
I can just see the headlines
Minister fired after being accused of stealing pick-a-nick baskets
Downtown Ottawa has been debeared peacefully. Soporific darts were involved, twice. After the first dose, when it was passing out, the bells of the nearby Notre-Dame Cathedral sounded and woke up the bear*. Second dose. Falls asleep contentedly on the branch. Firetruck ladder comes into play, etc.
Apparently, it’s a juvenile, perhaps a year-and-a-half old, and in very good shape.
*Something else to hold against Catholics!
So they just gave Grant some beer and cookies
Grant = short, hairy, hates wearing pants
Woohooo! New Releases!! 😀
I hope they find a good place to release that bear. I can imagine the stir a bear in the city would cause.
(haha Garf)
Ottawa is close to a lot of treed land, mostly on the Québec side — Ontario forestland is a bit further away, towards the west-northwest (the Calabogie Highlands and, further west, Algonquin Park).
We occasionally get moose wandering through the city and a few coyotes on the outskirts but no bears around here. Maybe the cities further north might.
We actually also got a moose event a few weeks ago. It did not end well for the moose.
And I think the moose was donated, sensitively???, to a First Nation — they do like a bit of moosemeat. Not a big seller in Ottawa, to my knowledge, that.
Aww poor moose. How about bison? Is that popular in Ottawa? It is around here.
I expect the wildlife in my area will be having a hard fall given all the fires.
About four years ago we had several bear in our neighbourhood. It sure wakes a person up when they smell then see a bear on their way home from work. It is a good thing that on that occasion I decided to walk up the middle of the road rather than on the sidewalk … who knows why I chose to do that but it saved my skin.
My inlaws live here but rural and have a camera in their yard; cougar, elk, bunnies, deer, bobcat, black bear … lots of action this year.
I am pleased to hear the bear in Ottawa was not destroyed. That is the go to here.
I like Chilly Gonzales but the N word makes me uncomfortable. I’ll have to listen more carefully to the lyrics when I am not preparing for a house guest.
Anyone have a favourite of the new releases?
Bison…
Nope, not here, unless they’re hiding with the muskoxen.
The vocals on My Flag is a Burning Rag of Love (Petra) reminded me of Bjork …
It’s actually illegal to sell moose meat in Canada. I think all game meat falls under that category. You can trade it though, or gift it I think. But not sell it. I’ve had moose meat, it’s really good – way better than deer. I’ve never had bear though.
It makes me sad when wild animals make their way into urban areas ,… it just usually means we’ve encroached too much, too far. Le sigh.
I like moose, strawberry and butterscotch
@ft It makes me sad as well. Us humans are pretty greedy and messy.
That we are, morgana. I don’t know that we do it intentionally but there’s no denying we are the primary agents of change in the destruction of wilderness habitat and all that.
Well, moose and bears, we humans encroaching too much… It’s sad, but when the bear’s in downtown Ottawa — where Ottawa’s been for (grabs a number out of his ***) 150 years maybe…; when a moose ends up on the six-lane Queensway that’s been there since 1960 (maybe)…
I do understand the point, it’s not as though we don’t have our actively sprawling suburbs; but in these two cases, it’s mostly a wild animal getting, how to put it, funneled into and bottled-in.
must have come up the river banks somehow?
…or across the Ottawa River. Though that’s more likely for the bear.
