Our Basement:
What does it mean to be an honest artist?
This is the question that I continue to ask myself as I attempt to construct a more current description of the life I have led and how it has shaped my band 36?.
There are many things of which I believe hang in the balance when considering one’s artistic integrity, but the one thing that I have come to need in art to consider it authentic is to feel everything unapologetically.
Regardless of emotional weight, depth of thought, or scope of relatability, the content has to feel like it comes from a real place.
“so what?” is about when being out with all of your friends can’t stop you from feeling alone – when you’re so down on yourself that it feels disingenuous to even engage with the people who are close with you.
I don’t think this song is really about a particular moment, so much as it is about the general feeling of disassociation that can creep its way into situations where we should be having a good time but we’re not.
The natural reaction when you are feeling super depressed is to overcompensate with faux-positive energy and pretend everything is super happy, which is what we did with the arrangement.
“so what?” is like when someone tells a funny joke about how they hate themselves. You laugh, but you also know they are serious.
Thanks for listening,
Taylor Cochrane // 36?
Hello
Hey garf! Aren’t you enroute to Leeds or somewhere? Do you have long cords dangling behind the bus?
…or the train?
I was using the buses on board free wifi and I am using my cell data in my room because I have yet to log into the free wifi here yet
Good morning everyone!
And, for my United States citizen self… I am happy about last night’s election results. Some things could have gone better, but happy overall.
Justin: I suspect that this sort of halfways correction is better than a complete swing to the Dems would have been. After all, there are still the two sides’ views to if not reconcile, then take account of. There’s gonna be no cutting along no dotted lines, and guns ain’t gonna fix a fucken thing, so Americans of all stripes have to try and get along.
But also: the future is coming. Old whites are dying. Things are changing. Dang, the young ‘uns may actually VOTE a little more…
The Democrats must (I think) start lining up valid candidates for the presidency — other than Hillary Clinton.
She’s a spent force — *was* a spent force last time; I exaggerate as bit there, but she sure is now. You wanna lose against trumporanother? Nominate Clinton as Dem candidate.
Benoît, you have a point on ‘old whites’ and it’s a generational thing. Obama was squarely in my generation and its values. I feel Obama could have done some things better, his lack of decisiveness was one, but am still so happy with who he was a president. Whereas Trump, to your point, represents the ‘old whites’. Myself and younger people are working here stating “Get the F out of our way! We’ve had it with your shit.”, and the ‘old whites’ know they are threatened and doing everything they can, some successfully, to hold on to power longer. Of course my argument there is clouded by political parties some. to your point younger persons voter turnout is huge and removing barriers to voting.
Yes… Dems really need good and better candidates people actually like. Beto is one, and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona is awesome too. There are others but those two up and comers come to mind first for me.
‘Check’ to both your posts!
Well, I have never heard of this band. The crash landing intro didn’t land in my heart but as I read the answer to, ” what does it mean to be an artists?” I was intrigued. By the end of the three plus minutes I can say that I am now engaged and will listen to them more.
@garfielduk have a great time in Leeds! I’m really looking forward to hearing how your time with Neko goes …
I didn’t get to speak to Neko but the show was amazing (I left my gift with Max running the merch stall)
I can relate to the track and the description. I have had some of my loneliest moments in a large crowd of people.
