Hello, I am Wild Raccoon, and I would like to welcome you to episode 17 of my podcast for the month of February 2019.
On this months show, we will take a look at just a hand-full of the nominations for this years Juno awards.
For those of you that are wondering, we recently ran out of mixtapes that had been intended for Wendy so we have had to go over to our backup source, Conner.

hello
‘Morning, Garf. How’re things?
things are good(ish) here, I’m a bit tired and I should go out but I don’t want to
how is life in Ottawa?
Well, what with the snows we’ve had, overwhelming the city’s removal capacities, and a couple of superficial thaws followed by freezes, side streets are still passable by car, but only just. And today ’til tomorrow noon, we’re expecting 30-40 centimetres of blowing* snow, which would be the biggest dump yet. Many schools are already closed, whereas usually, it’s just school buses that are cancelled.
*The snow surface on virgin ground is already glare ice, so there well may be major drifts. I’m planning not to take my car out for a spell!
Garf: GO OUT! You’ll feel better afterwards, a bit of fresh air and all that…
IT’S GONNA BE SNOWSHOE WEATHER IN OTTAWA! I figure tomorrow morning, depending on wind direction, snow may well be piled up against the door.
but it’s so much easier to just go to sleep
I used to enjoy snowshoeing. My dad’s old pair is in the garage. Do you have some modern snowshoes Benoït? It has gained more popularity in recent years around here. I think we need more snow this winter though.
Good morning. Thanks for the podcast WR.
Getting out of the house is a good thing but can be hard to do at times.
Yes, I bought modern snowshoes years ago. Invaluable, as they’re made with steel claw-grips below the foot platform. That makes them much better than the old wooden ones when there’s an ice surface. And that’s the case right now… Mind, I find that poles are essential in hilly terrain.
“Hilly terrain”: outeide of being my next granola band’s name, that’s a type of irregularity we have here in in the “East”. ;-s)
“In in”
FWIW, the make of mine is American, called Atlas. At the time, their harness & strap system was the best; it remains excellent years later.
Interesting. Thanks Benoït. I shall investigate this thought further in the future.
Hah! Got Benoït without my glasses… Changed, now.
I mean, double dots are ridiculous, but a pointy roof makes total sense. Unpronounced and all.
Woohoo! KEXP plays Plea from a cat named Virtute! (Runs and gets headphones)
And now Metric. Guess which three-letter entity doesn’t effing play them, Weakerthans & Metric!
I am awake now
I am working on another listening party soon, this time with alt-folk artist Steven Bowers from Victoria, BC.
Now it’s CKCU, with Bang Bang You’re Dead (Hannah Georgas).
Hi, awake!
If you keep going with jokes like that I will start calling you Dad!

Benoît, I thought I had finally figured out how to do your accent in your name with the little hat thing and then I looked and you had two little dots so I figured that out too. Now I know how easy on my laptop it is to do that. I haven’t ventured as far as learning how it affects the sound of the vowel but I will!
Dar, in French, the ^ over an o makes it go like an English o — without it, the Fr. o is more open. Similarish with the a (from Eng. flat a to aw).
On an e, it does EXACTLY the same thing as an *accent grave* (è); so…
Finally, on i and on u, it does absolutely nothing; it’s I think a holdover from the past.
Incidentally, the ^ mark is the circumflex accent (circonflexe). The two little dots are the dieresis or trema (tréma): they indicate vowels being pronounced separately (as in Noël).
Checking things on the wiki, I just learned (again, prob.) that the dot on the i is called a tittle.
Almost made me titter,
Haha! How titillating!
Also learned “titer” today, being the quantity of something (say a drug) sufficient to have an effect.
I hope we don’t have a pop quiz any time soon
