Hey Our Basement,
We’re very excited to share our first new single since our 2018 release Girls Girls Girls!
Girls Girls Girls was a wild ride. It saw us across Canada and overseas to the UK. It hit #1 on the national Earshot Loud charts, with singles “Summer Love” at #1 on the Indigenous Music Countdown, and “Atmosphere” #7 on CBC R3-30. It also just won Rock Recording Of The Year and Single Of The Year at the YYC Music Awards!
I wrote “The Girls Are O.K.” while in my third trimester this summer, expecting twins— no idea what their gender would be. At the same time I was scheduling this year’s Girls Rock Camp in Calgary.
The whole thing got me thinking about these strong, weird, cool girls that I get to work with every year and watch grow, and how if I ended up with two baby girls, I wouldn’t be worried about or for them at all, because the girls from camp were already light years ahead of where I was at their age.
They’re so brave and they already know they don’t have to take any bullshit— something I learned much later in life.
They’re going to be more than okay – they’re going to be great.
To put a bow on it, I had this year’s Girls Rock Camp Calgary contribute backing vocals to the song, highlighting the driving force behind my inspiration.
Of course, there’s still struggle, and lots wrong with gender divisions and privilege. But, it’s nice to take a step back from that struggle and look at how it’s affected the younger generations.
It makes me really proud. I hope you enjoy!
MIESHA & THE SPANKS
I should have gone out today, but I saw the weather and changed my mind
Good Morning
I should probably use this time to record some podcasts
Good morning! I love the story and the song. How great to use the Girls Rock for backing vocals too!
How was everyone’s weekend?
I slept through most of mine.
It is 4 weeks until fireworks night here and it already sounds like a war zone out there
Great backstory to the song.
Once me morgana heads to work I’ll be able to press play on the big computer and see if it is my jam.
My weekend was very low key; rotating between Physiotherapy exercises, heat pad on my back (I set the chair up so I can watch the chickadees in the bird feeder and/or read) and some small tasks like reaching food from the fridge or walking halfway around the block.
Garfield: Is that Guy Fawkes Day or Guy Fucks It Up Day?
I am back!
My weekend was good. The Celebration of Life for my cousin was one of those bitter sweet events. Sad circumstance to reunite with family. I went to see my son in the lead role as Captain Blood in the play twice and wished I was there every night. He was soo good and I am so proud of him. I got the trailer put away for the winter. Also bitter sweet. It was a nice weekend here weather wise and I took advantage of it.
My niece is getting married next weekend, so it will be a sweet sweet occasion. Only problem is I have nothing to wear!
