Q1, Would you like to introduce yourself?
yes please!
Down With Space is a Montreal based band consisting of an English speaker, (Helsten) and a French speaker, (Dumas) who have found an understanding through music when language can sometimes elude communication. Both have a strong background in audio production so by working out of Delicate/Automatic recording studio (co-owned by Helsten), it’s natural that they have adopted a DIY ethos to keeping their process in house while creating sounds that are equally balanced between synthesis and organic instruments.
Q2, Did you ever run away from home?
nope.
Q3, If you could relive one moment in your life, which would it be?
I tend to live in the now, not the past but if I had to pick something, I guess missed concerts. I should have made the drive to see Sir Paul at the Quebec city 400th anniversary. Or the Tragically Hip. I can’t believe I never saw them play, my loss for sure.
Q4, To what extent do you plan your future?
Not a whole lot.
Q5, What things embarrass you?
I’m not so easily embarrassed.
Q6, When were you first asked for your autograph?
After a show in my first band.
Q7, What toy or game did you enjoy playing when you were younger?
Connect Four, Jenga.
Q8, And, most importantly, what is your favourite type of cookie?
oatmeal chocolate chip.
Homebody is the upcoming single from Down With Space due out April 28th. Written and produced by band members Rob Helsten (vocals/guitar/synth) and Steve Dumas (drums/bass/vocals) at Delicate/Automatic (co-owned by Helsten) this track emanates that fear of the unknown that we all share when we decide it’s better to be an introvert. Featuring a minimalist soundscape and a driving rhythm that will keep you locked into the vocal arrangement, the intricacies of the chord progressions are hidden within the simplicity of the delivery. Initially the main part was composed on a Roland Juno 106 but later transcribed to guitar to better fit the feel of the song by pairing the jangle of a telecaster with the pulse of analog synth bass echoing sentiments of bands like Spoon, Low, or Arcade Fire that flirt the line between rock and electronics.
