Q1, Would you like to introduce yourself?
My name is Joe McLeod, I am a Toronto-based singer-songwriter who loves a good cup of coffee, long walks in the forest and jamming with my pals. Nice to meet you!
Q2, Do you prefer performing live or recording in the studio?
I definitely prefer playing live, there is something so special about sharing a moment in time with people. You are all collectively feeling the effects of music and the community it brings. I love recording and being creative in the studio, but sharing music live with folks is truly the sweet spot for me.
Q3, How old do you feel?
I have thought about this a lot. I feel like I am an old soul at heart so I might say I feel like I am 57 years old. I love cups of tea, early bed-times and playing chess. I am not sure that’s the typical 57-year-old life but I feel like a combo of an older person who just wants to chill out and a young buck who wants to conquer the world!
Q4, To what extent do you plan your future?
I typically plan my life in 1-2 year increments. I love spontaneity and will always jump at the opportunity for something fun and random, BUT I am a planner. I like to know what I am working towards. I have many large goals and tend to break them down by the tasks that can be accomplished within the span of 1-2 years and then reassess.
Q5, What has been your most glorious failure?
My most glorious failure might be when I tried to make one of the university cover bands I was in, into an original act. I was playing with some of my best friends but nobody wanted to pursue music the way that I did, for them it was more of a fun hobby. We played some of the most fun, sweaty, greasy shows in the university dive bars, but when it came to trying to build something original it completely failed.
Q6, Are you a good cook?
I am not a bad cook by any means, but I absolutely hate taking time out of my day to cook if I am busy. If anything I will cook a HUGE amount of food on Sunday and just reheat it all week. If I am in the zone, I rarely want to get pulled out to prepare a meal so I have succumbed to ordering too many UberEats meals for my own good. My favourite fast-food chain is called Mary Brown’s and they have a sandwich called a “Big Mary” and there is a running joke in my friend group that the album is actually called
“Big Mary’s In Nebraska” instead of “Cloud Berries In Alaska” because of how many I ate during the making of this record.
Q7, What toy or game did you enjoy playing when you were younger?
I used to LOVE playing Xbox when I was younger. I had all the latest games and the latest system, I used to stay up until 3am most nights gaming which is hard for me to believe now. If you put an xbox game from the last 8 years in front of me I probably would not have heard of it! I always think I’ll get back into it but I think I would lose all my productivity, I find video games to be way too much fun.
Q8, And, most importantly, what is your favourite type of cookie?
Gotta go with the classic Oatmeal cookie. Plain and simple. Reliable.
