Mother’s Day is just around the corner, falling on Sunday, May 12th, and what better way to honour and celebrate the incredible women who have nurtured us than with a special playlist dedicated to mothers and motherhood? This week’s playlist is filled with tracks that capture the essence of motherhood, from heartfelt songs about mothers to those that express gratitude for their unwavering love and support, and even some that touch on the complexities of the mother-child relationship. The playlist is available on Tidal Music, Spotify, and YouTube.
Mother’s Day is a significant occasion in Canada, where people take the opportunity to express their gratitude and appreciation for mothers and mother figures in their lives. These figures can include step-mothers, mothers-in-law, guardians, and even cherished family friends who have played a maternal role. It’s a time to reflect on the care and guidance these remarkable women have provided, supporting us through life’s challenges and helping shape who we are today.
As Mother’s Day approaches, it serves as a reminder to thank these extraordinary women for their unwavering support and the countless sacrifices they have made for us. It’s a time to show our gratitude for their love, care, and guidance, which have helped shape us into the individuals we are today.
There are a couple of songs in the playlist that hold special meaning for me as a mother myself. “Baby Mine” from Dumbo reminds me of watching the original with my son when he was young, evoking the profound love between a mother and child. In our playlist, you’ll find Arcade Fire’s version from the 2019 Dumbo. “You Are My Sunshine” makes me tear up every time, as it takes me back to a time I almost lost my son and then heard that song, which took on a whole different meaning with lyrics like “please don’t take my sunshine away”. In the playlist is The Royal Foundry’s version of the song released in 2018.
The last couple of months have been tough ones for my mother with a hospital stay and a cancer diagnosis, marking the beginning of chemo. Although I’m not a huge fan of Céline Dion, her song “Goodbye’s (The Saddest Word)” accurately expresses my feelings during this time. Additionally, “Shine” by Chorus of Courage with Alysha Brilla serves as my encouragement to my mother to keep her head up and shine through her struggles.
On this Mother’s Day, we extend our warmest wishes to all mothers and mother figures out there. May your day be filled with love, appreciation, and the joyous sounds of Canadian indie music. Take a moment to reflect on the profound impact these incredible women have had on your life and express your heartfelt gratitude. Happy Mother’s Day to all the remarkable mothers and mother figures who have nurtured and supported us every step of the way. I love you, Mom! 💖
