Celebrating Black Legacy and Leadership in Canadian Music

#BHM2025

As we observe Black History Month this February, OurBasement is proud to honour the profound contributions of Black Canadian artists who have shaped our nation’s musical landscape. This year’s theme, “Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations,” emphasizes the rich diversity within Black Canadian communities and the pivotal role of Black leadership in crafting a legacy for future generations.

A Journey Through Pioneering Moments

Reflecting on the milestones achieved by Black Canadian musicians offers a glimpse into their enduring impact:

  • Portia White’s International Acclaim (1944): Hailing from Nova Scotia, contralto Portia White broke barriers by becoming the first Black Canadian concert singer to gain international fame. Her 1944 debut at New York’s Town Hall marked the beginning of her celebrated global tours.
  • Kaytranada’s Historic Grammy Win (2021): Montreal-based DJ and producer Kaytranada made history by becoming the first Black producer and openly gay artist to win a Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album.
  • Mustafa’s Poetic Debut (2024): Toronto’s Mustafa Ahmed, known for his evocative poetry and songwriting, released his debut album “Dunya” in 2024. The album blends acoustic melodies with poignant reflections on faith and personal experiences, showcasing the depth of Black Canadian artistry.

OurBasement’s Musical Tribute

In alignment with this year’s theme, we’ve curated a playlist that showcases primarily new releases from pioneering figures and emerging talents, highlighting the evolution and diversity of Black Canadian music. Available on Tidal Music, Spotify, and YouTube, the playlist serves as a platform to amplify Black voices and stories.

Engage, Educate, and Celebrate

We encourage all Canadians to delve deeper into the histories and contributions of Black Canadian communities. By engaging with their stories, we not only honour their legacy but also inspire future generations to continue the journey of leadership and innovation.

Let the rhythms and melodies of this playlist be a reminder of the resilience, creativity, and enduring influence of Black Canadians in shaping our cultural mosaic.
