Back in 2013, the exact date being lost to time, Grant Lawrence decided to add a new feature where he would play a small selection, 5 tracks, during his Friday show in an attempt to kick start the weekend.
The Beer O’clock set, named after the time on Friday where you would start enjoying your first beer of the weekend, quickly grew in size becoming more popular with many fans of Grants show but not so much with the people in charge due to breaking many of the station’s format rules (3 out of any 5 track block must have been released in the last 6 months or so, etc.) which eventually meant that the segment was eventually forced off the air later that same year.
On August 2nd, R3 community member binsy shared the first of many playlists curated by listeners, hosts and musicians. Unfortunately, many of these playlists have been lost since the site they were hosted on CBC Radio 3 removed the data from its site 🙁 but a few of them were converted into Spotify playlists and you will find 2 of them shared below.
First up we have the list created by the person that usually handles our Friday post. Then we have my list that looks at the top 24 most popular tracks contained within the previous lists (yes I know there are only 22 tracks, like any time you move things vanish on the way).
I hope you enjoy them and rest assured your regularly scheduled host will return next week. If you would like to hear some more Beer O’clock playlists try searching for the term BeerO’clock on Spotify or join the CBC R3 Community on Facebook where new playlists have been created weekly for a little while now.
Thanks Garf!
